Bloodwork

Summary

What bloodwork changes show up with GLP1RA use and how concerning are borderline thyroid or lipase results?

One user shared recent panels showing mostly normal results except mildly elevated lipase, low total T4, high T3 uptake, and high-normal TSH that matched their baseline. Others noted that some physicians might treat the thyroid values anyway and suggested sharing results with a doctor. Skepticism arose about labs pushing retests on near-normal numbers, with one person recounting a prior false alarm that normalized on repeat. The original poster decided the lipase elevation was insignificant without symptoms and chose not to worry.

I'm wondering what others have found with their blood tests while using GLP1RA meds. I got a bunch of panels done and everything was fine except lipase came back a bit high at 81, amylase was okay, and some thyroid stuff like TSH at 4.09, total T4 low at 4.8, free T4 normal, T3 uptake high at 38%. Seems close enough to normal, especially since my TSH is usually on the high side. The lipase worried me but I read it's not a big deal without symptoms.

At those thyroid levels, quite a few doctors might start treatment. Since your T4 is under the normal range, your T3 could be low as well. If the GLP1 is for weight loss, perhaps discuss with your physician if they'd consider addressing it.

Maybe the lab wants you to come back for another test soon because those numbers are right on the edge. I could be too suspicious though. I've had a result way off once, got stressed, but the repeat was normal. Without a doctor to explain and follow up, I'd prefer skipping the tests to avoid unnecessary worry.

No cause to doubt Quest here, but I'm not stressing over these results since my thyroid numbers have always sat at the edge. After checking on the lipase, it doesn't mean much if there aren't other symptoms.

You should probably show these results to your doctor when you see them.

Labs do have a financial reason to encourage retesting. Still, it's not usually an issue since they don't give any interpretation of the results.
