Anyone on SSRI's or Antipsychotics?

9 replies8 peopleMar 16, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Can GLP-1s help restore previous feelings and support weight loss while on SSRIs or antipsychotics?

Users on these meds describe weight gain and emotional disconnection as a difficult experience, with some reporting that GLP-1s like tirzepatide have improved confidence and reduced inflammation. Several note they stayed on their psychiatric medications while losing weight and adjusting doses downward as BMI dropped. Others are tapering off SSRIs and related drugs slowly, and a few emphasize that the final pounds often involve factors beyond the medication such as sleep and training.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Some participants plan to remain on their meds indefinitely while others are actively tapering off.

This feels like its own special torment. Hoping others here can relate. I keep recalling my former self and the way I used to feel, and I'm working extremely hard to reach that again. Can anyone say whether GLP-1s might make it possible? Only around five pounds remain, all around my midsection now. It's discouraging. Still, I need to hold onto hope and keep trying to recover how I used to feel.

I'm on 60mg of cymbalta and tirz at 7.5 mg. Managing okay given everything else. Severe anxiety is part of my situation. Losing weight has improved things quite a bit, so I suppose tirz, and previously ozempic for roughly four years, has given me more confidence.

Yes to SSRI's. Weight came on through several routes, with the meds making it worse. Keep going, it can happen and we'll get through it. The GLP's made a big difference for my confidence, and I stayed on my meds the whole time, only lowering the dose once my BMI dropped and I no longer needed the higher amount. Wishing you good luck.

I'm slowly tapering off an SSRI and Seroquel. Those are the worst ones in my view. Hoping selank will support the process, though that's personal. Topiramate is also in the mix and it tends to produce 7-8% weight loss, while the others promote gain, so it roughly evens out.

I know exactly where you are and it hurts badly. I'm mostly past that point now. One factor is lowering inflammation, and you can get some relief by building ways to address it. Tirz has given me a bit of help there. There really is hope though. I used to believe I'd remain stuck, but I made it through and you can too.

Thanks for sharing that here. More people probably recognize this feeling than you think. GLP-1s can support steadier habits and appetite control, yet the final pounds, particularly when they're mostly abdominal, usually aren't just about effort or fat reduction. At that point it often involves body composition, stress, sleep, and hormones. Feeling better again is possible, though it may not mean returning exactly to your old self, which isn't necessarily negative. With strength training, adequate protein, and avoiding chronic undereating, many end up feeling more stable and in control than before. Keep some hope but aim forward rather than backward.

I understand that feeling. Paroxetine led to about 60 pounds gained in six months. The medication was still necessary and I'm grateful it was available since it helped significantly. Now that I'm doing better the weight needs to come off.

My major depression is probably why I've always been heavier. I've never taken meds for it consistently, and getting mental health support is a complicated process. After losing most of the weight I feel somewhat improved, though laziness remains an issue.
