Sulfur burps and heart burn

14 replies13 peopleJun 9, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Why do sulfur burps and heartburn suddenly appear months into stable retatrutide dosing?

People on retatrutide or tirzepatide note these effects can emerge randomly after long stable use even without diet or dose changes. Suspected triggers include red meat timing, cruciferous vegetables, microbiome shifts, or slow buildup. Common relief comes from probiotics, digestive enzymes, Gas-X, ginger or peppermint tea, thorough chewing, and occasional short dose reductions; heartburn is sometimes handled with omeprazole.

Been using 4 mg of Reta every six days since February. Nothing about my food, dose, or injection schedule has shifted. Workouts have stayed the same with moderate cardio plus heavy lifting. Never dealt with the sulfur burps or heartburn everyone mentions until now. Any idea why they’re appearing only recently?

No clue on your question, but I got the sulfur burps for the first time after adding 0.6 mg of Survo. Been on Tirz almost a year with zero issues before that. Wonder what the glucagon part does. Sorry, just turning your question back around.

Most sides tend to fade after a while. My heartburn has mostly cleared except on injection day. Sleep has been rough though and that started around 6 mg. Now at 8 mg.

Had mild heartburn while eating early on and it cleared by week six.

Tracking what you eat? Maybe something you’re digesting slower now because of the Reta is causing it, like kimchi or eggs.

Had the sulfur burps and heartburn on Tirzepatide. Switched to Reta and now suddenly have so much gas I could probably power a small country. Might be a slow buildup in the system. Keeping hydration and electrolytes up. Bodies might just decide it’s time for sides. Reports say these hit randomly even months later on stable doses. Gas-X, digestive enzymes with meals, extra ginger tea or peppermint have helped. Dropping the dose a bit for a week or two sometimes calms it. Not alone here.

Found some probiotic enzyme pills that work really well. Don’t need the exact ones, just look into similar products.

Got them right away and they worsened at 2 mg. Started a probiotic with Acidophilus and haven’t had them since.

Only had the sulfur burps for a few weeks on tirz before they stopped. Likely a microbiome thing where something in the gut makes H2S gas. Unless lots of eggs are involved. Could come from the GLP, diet, or weight shifts. If heartburn bothers you, treating it is probably safer. Proton pump inhibitors are easy to get over the counter, and a doctor visit makes sense if it’s bad. Probiotics or fiber supplements might help change the microbiome.

On Tirz without burps but get heartburn that I handle with Omeprazole once every four days. It hasn’t eased over time. Split my shot into two 2.5 mg doses weekly. Stayed at the starting dose for maintenance at 125 lbs because stronger appetite suppression makes it hard to eat enough for muscle. Curious about the probiotics mentioned.

Yes, logging everything daily in MyFitnessPal. Diet hasn’t really changed. Only thought is the red meat for dinner about two and a half to three hours before bed.

Had sulfur burps years ago with no meds, then never again. Figured it was from Korean BBQ even though I’ve eaten it since without issues. Some meat just causes trouble. Maybe try pescatarian for a while.

Heard on a podcast that sulfur burps come from cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Not sure how true that is but it stood out.

Different tip that helps me and a couple friends: chew food until it’s basically mush before swallowing. Stomach is already moving slower so big pieces just make things worse.

Just started 1 mg Reta and now have daily sulfur burps. Eating mostly scrambled eggs plus beef or chicken. Noticed they come if I drink water too fast, so trying smaller amounts more often. Also get them after waking up.
