Hair Loss on Tirzeptide?

24 replies20 peopleApr 7, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Does tirzepatide cause hair loss or is it from rapid weight loss and low calories?

Participants link the shedding mainly to aggressive calorie restriction and rapid fat loss rather than the medication directly. Several note the effect matches telogen effluvium seen after bariatric surgery or other quick dieting, and most expect recovery once intake rises and weight stabilizes. Advice centers on boosting protein and overall calories, adding minoxidil, checking iron, and recognizing normal daily shedding.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Some attribute it strictly to calories and protein while others allow the peptide or GHK-Cu timing as possible factors

Whether the user's current 1100-1200 calorie level is enough to stop further thinning or if specific missing nutrients remain

Nothing here is advice.

Has anyone lost hair while on Tirzeptide? I'm a 60 year old guy who used to have a full head. Lately the shower screen shows quite a bit collecting. Reading pointed to diet problems from the drug rather than the drug itself, yet my meals seem solid with over 90 grams of protein, plenty of vegetables, fish, chicken, some beef, and fresh greens. Most of the loss showed up after returning from deployment where calories were very low and weight came off fast. At home intake is higher but still over a thousand calories. I've also been using GHK-Cu for loose neck skin, which is supposed to support hair, yet the timing matches when I first noticed the issue. Without a screen away it is hard to know if it started earlier.

Home from deployment? Still serving at 60? Just wondering.

You probably need more protein and calories overall. Hair and nails get nutrients last, especially during weight loss, so it returns slowly. Have your nails been growing slower too? I've gone through similar situations after surgery and nearly became anemic once.

That calorie level is very low, even for a small woman 1400 is the usual floor. Starving yourself like that is likely triggering the hair loss. Run your numbers with a TDEE calculator to see what you actually require each day.

It might simply be age related and unrelated to the diet. Have you tried minoxidil or other common treatments? Rapid weight loss is known to cause shedding though, and it usually is not permanent unless you already have genetic balding. Eating a bit more could help test that. Some women like biotin or prenatal vitamins for growth, though I have not tried them.

New to these compounds but experienced with hair care: most people shed 50 to 150 hairs daily anyway. Noticing it collect versus just going down the drain can seem alarming. If thickness looks the same so far, no need to worry yet, though the low calories others mentioned are worth addressing.

Look into telogen effluvium. My wife uses iron supplements and finds they reduce her hair loss.

A relative dealt with the same problem. Raising protein and starting minoxidil made a big difference with new growth in previously thin areas.

BlueAlder28archiveApr 14

No visible thinning yet. Early on I was too aggressive with dosing every six days, raising amounts often, daily long gym sessions, and very low calories because progress felt so good after decades of high BMI. Never went past 10 mg of Tirz every six days and recently added a low dose of Cagrilintide offset by three days. Appetite is still strong. The app shows 1000 to 1200 calories now at home, though I suspect under reporting, and anything near 1600 stops the scale from moving. I really cannot go higher without losing progress.

Hair loss is serious. I already have it and that is one reason I have not started the reta I purchased. AHK-Cu is said to work better for hair than GHK-Cu which is more for skin. Good luck.

WarmHarbour28archiveApr 15

At the highest Tirz dose now, but about a year ago around 5 mg my hair began falling. At 63 I still have plenty. I blamed the weight loss itself, not the drug. I have not tried anything to slow it and the shedding has eased along with the weight loss rate.

LevelTimber28archiveApr 26

I lost quite a bit on Tirz and ended up on oral minoxidil. Found out the hard way it can affect blood pressure and cause dizziness. Guess I will just go bald.

AmberCinder18archiveApr 26

Rapid weight loss itself seems to be the trigger more than diet quality, based on what I have read, and it shows up often in bariatric patients. Many say the effect is temporary though.

NorthThistle42archiveApr 26

The hair loss comes down to not enough protein, plain and simple.

AmberSignal47archiveApr 26

Quick drops in weight can make hair fall out even with good nutrition. When I lost 30 pounds fast years ago it came out in clumps, and the same happened to my mom. It grew back once weight stabilized.

RustLantern55archiveApr 28

I dropped 40 pounds in months from stress and barely eating. A couple months later I lost about 75 percent of my hair over five months even though I was only 28. It took two years and some medications to come back. From your description the timing after returning home might just be when you finally saw the normal shed because of the drain screen. If no actual thinning is visible it could be ordinary daily loss. If thinning is happening it probably traces to the earlier weight loss phase rather than the medication.

Right, no catcher when away. I am gone three months then home three months. Before the diet the catcher at home never caught much from me, only from my wife, so the change lines up with starting. Now four months in I am starting to feel the hair is less full. I have eased off the extreme low intake and the app shows 1100 to 1200 calories, half again what I ate during the fast loss period. Going much above that stops progress. My body seems adapted to 1500 after decades of dieting. Other things include daily GHK-Cu for the last two months plus Wolverine recently, and VIP soon for blood pressure. What nutrient am I short on to protect the hair? Protein is near 100 grams a day.

LevelFenwick49archiveApr 28

Your meals sound balanced but protein may need raising. For adults over 50 the target is often 1.6 grams per kilo or more. Adding legumes or other dense plant proteins could help. Women commonly use oral or topical minoxidil during weight loss and men can too, along with finasteride, but discuss blood pressure concerns with a provider first.

RustBeacon82archiveApr 28

My hair was already thin before Tirz so I read about the heavy shed phase and started oral minoxidil ahead of time. It stopped the extra loss and I plan to keep using it for possible regrowth.

ClearMarble41archiveMay 3

Like others said, missing nutrients from the diet are the likely cause. From my experience low iron is a top reason for shedding, so bloodwork is worth doing if not already. An iron infusion can improve both hair and energy. Keep the minoxidil too.

CopperSparrow10archiveMay 3

Check the risks but I recovered from rapid weight loss shedding using minoxidil and finasteride. The latter can be controversial yet I had no side effects and it seemed to help regrowth most.

RustAnchor27archiveMay 15

Not sure if it matters for you, but topical minoxidil is toxic to cats and dogs.

Did not know that, thanks. Plenty of dogs around here.
