Digestive enzymes for GLP-1 side effects

13 replies7 peopleJul 4, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Do digestive enzymes help reduce GI side effects from GLP-1 medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Some users report that digestive enzymes noticeably reduce bloating, reflux, and other GI issues tied to slower digestion from these drugs, with effects reversing when they stop and restart the enzymes. Others find only partial or no relief, and time or different supplements like magnesium or probiotics work better for them. Specific ingredient combinations are suggested by one experienced user, while constipation remains a persistent problem for at least one participant despite multiple attempts.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether enzymes help depends on the type of GI symptom; they may worsen hunger or fail entirely for fast-transit issues or stubborn constipation.

Still open

Whether any supplement regimen can fully resolve ongoing constipation for long-term users, or if stopping the medication is the only solution.

Nothing here is advice.

Taking digestive enzymes has really cut down on the side effects from my medication. When I stopped for a couple days the issues came back stronger, but restarting them made them go away again. Pick a quality one and take it right after breakfast, never on an empty stomach.

Yeah, that lines up with what happened for me. Roughly seven months into using tirz, those stomach troubles have faded away for the most part. Yet enzymes to help with digestion made a huge difference early in the process. Taking magnesium oxide each day also turned out to be really useful.

I somewhat concur on that point. It hinges on the exact stomach troubles these meds trigger. When the trouble is delayed processing like heaviness or gas buildup they might ease things but if transit speeds up instead there is probably little benefit. In my experience they ease that sluggish feeling yet also tend to boost appetite so they suit certain situations but not others and they fell short for me because of that side effect.

Every day I include ginger with papaya plus prebiotic and probiotic supplements in my habits. My job involves a wastewater facility. Thanks to this approach I stay free of any digestive trouble whatsoever while using 4mg reta.

Using that supplement each day got rid of my smelly burps for good. I still need to test out enzymes though. Glad you mentioned they are effective.

I've experimented with every possible approach yet the stomach problems from this medication stay unchanged. Time alone has brought any improvement at all, aside from the constant bowel trouble I've resigned myself to enduring for the whole duration of use. That means stopping treatment is approaching fast. Just five doses remain so this will probably mark the finish.

Have you tried fiber supplements and/or herbal digestive aids??

Yep. Latest one I tried, last night is a magnesium product, also does nothing.

The brand you buy should include support for stomach acid and protein digestion, a mix of amylase protease and lipase, an aid for fat digestion, and fruit enzymes like those from pineapple and papaya.

Whoa, it seems like you've unleashed some major firepower here.

After my three daily meals I always have a thousand milligrams of vitamin C in the calcium version because that stops me getting the runs.

I came across a tablet containing magnesium oxide along with vitamin C and potassium. The mix seemed useful to me. It delivered better results than the other supplement I had tried. I figure that product lacks calcium. Naturally keeping up fluid intake counts. Hardly any remedy eases constipation without enough water in the system.

Each day I consume five or six half liter bottles filled with spring water. To me this volume appears sufficient and the trouble isn't related to hydration levels so I'm unsure what it could be.
