Measurements, heck with the scale!

Summary

How can I track real progress during a long weight-loss plateau when the scale won't budge?

Participants describe switching from scale weight to body measurements and occasional DEXA scans. One user reports losing 10 inches at the hips, 8 at the waist and 4 at the thighs after months of no scale movement. Others call the scale unreliable and note that measurements plus scans better show fat loss versus muscle retention on GLP medications. Everyone agrees non-scale methods improve motivation.

After months with no movement the scale just makes me feel worse. I already tightened calories, added more activity and tried every trick that worked before, yet nothing changed. I had not checked measurements since the start. Clothes were looser but I had no idea how many inches were actually gone. The first time I tried the tape it would not reach around my hips and that moment felt awful. This week I measured again and found ten inches gone from the hips, eight from the waist and four from the thighs. I skipped the arms early on but probably lost at least three. Anyone stuck for a long time should track inches instead of only watching the scale. Seeing those numbers changed how I feel about the whole process.

The scale and I have a love-hate thing going and I never fully trust the numbers. It has been around since I was little so I keep it, but if something better existed I would get rid of it. Tracking other ways to see change is worth it and those wins feel good.

I like the idea of getting rid of it completely. Some days even that would not feel like enough.

DEXA scans give a lot of useful detail. I used to get them once a year and they show body fat clearly plus muscle levels, which can drop easily with these medications. Now that weight is stable I focus on building muscle and scan every six months. I wish I had started the scans earlier than the one-year mark.

I agree that measuring the body gives the clearest picture of what is actually happening.
