Does anyone else have this weird experience?

Summary

Why do I lose my appetite but then can't stop eating once I start, especially on GLP drugs?

People describe starting with no hunger or interest in food yet continuing to graze or binge once they begin, often with carb-rich items triggering further cravings. Some link it to pre-GLP patterns or weight loss effects, while others note the drugs reduce or eliminate the issue at higher doses. A few mention thirst, speed of eating, or specific trigger foods as factors.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether the behavior is mainly a carb reaction, a GLP-related aversion effect, or simply thirst or habit.

Sometimes I have no desire for food at all and nothing sounds good. But if I take that first bite anyway, stopping feels nearly impossible. Yesterday I began with just a piece of corn and kept going with bread, a peach, an egg, and yogurt. It wasn't real hunger driving it, just the act of starting. Anyone else run into this?

RustBeacon82archiveJul 21

Lately there have been stretches when I felt like sampling bits from all kinds of foods because nothing quite hit what my system seemed to want. So I kept trying small tastes from lots of different options hoping to land on the right one.

Earlier on I experienced it but the treatment wiped it away.

Something like that occurred to me the night before while having supper. Physically I needed food since it had been seven hours without any, yet my mind didn't want any. But after beginning the meal I got this impulse to swallow everything rapidly. My partner saved the moment by questioning whether I was even chewing at all. That got me to notice and quit gobbling like an animal. 🐷

ClearWillow37archiveJul 21

Maybe the foods high in carbohydrates triggered the pleasure centers in the mind, such as those involving dopamine. That effect could explain why it's difficult to quit after beginning. My routine involves consuming just a single daily meal consisting primarily of animal protein and lipids. Even tasting a small amount of carbohydrates leaves me extremely hungry right away, and this urge continues until I avoid them entirely for roughly seventy-two hours.

I've tried this approach in the past. A single mouthful of sweet treat would be enough to ease that urge, after which I'd discard whatever remained.

I agree with that habit as well. My usual pace when consuming meals is quite rapid, which means I often need to remind myself to take it easier and break down the bites more thoroughly.

Same issue came up for me. I noticed gulping down liquid during those times did the trick because thirst was likely all it was.

CopperSignal27archiveJul 21

Before those treatments I would get hit with overwhelming cravings soon after tasting just a little of the richer or faster-digesting items and then found it nearly impossible to quit. The medications together with largely steering clear of those same items have pretty much ended my episodes of uncontrolled eating. The pattern feels like it could stem from how the body reacts to starches or from the way the drugs create dislike for many ordinary meals. Did the same thing show up prior to starting the regimen and have you dropped a large amount of weight since then. Shedding that much mass can spark really strong appetite when the system senses nearby food and responds by wanting a taste of whatever it craves. If the drugs have not been in use very long and a reduced intake is still being followed before they reach full strength or a useful level the situation usually eases once the amounts go up. One clear change I noticed right away was feeling satisfied after much smaller portions than before and that shift seems common for most users which helps explain why the approach works for reducing body mass. Adding a solid portion of protein to nearly every meal helped me most with appetite because it keeps you content longer per calorie and the body tends to signal a stop after a while. It may also help to stay away from meals that are only starches or to combine them with protein sources.

I can manage ordinary meals and balanced nutrition without any trouble at all. Yet those elegant baked goods, cocoa bars, the sweets I like best, and crunchy kernels still need to stay tucked away out of view. They stir up the golem inside me.

ClearQuill84archiveJul 21

I have a comparable situation. For example even without appetite at one point in the day I need to make myself consume food because of exercise and the requirement for additional protein. At the beginning I compel the intake but as I proceed I develop some hunger. It's not intense yet after completing the scheduled amount I desire extra bites. However by waiting around fifteen to twenty minutes without adding anything total satisfaction arrives and the desires disappear.

I've succeeded at skipping snacks quite effectively during the last couple weeks, though the previous day I dreamt about feasting on some beloved treats 😭. It suddenly hit me that this feeling represents life without constant urges around food πŸ™‚.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 21

Most of the time I don't feel much appetite anyway, and I get satisfied pretty quickly during a meal. But I still consume food regularly.

GreenMarble65archiveJul 21

Seeing potato chips makes that junk food loving side of me appear instantly from nowhere.

Wow it looks like you went with that option. How's the commute treating you these days? Bet you don't even check maps anymore. Haha just playing around. I ended up getting the same thing.

RustSparrow80archiveJul 21

At the moment I've got it here and my appetite is kicking in but skipping remains possible. Consuming it would still raise my protein levels.

LevelWillow41archiveJul 21

Occasionally this occurs for me too, though I find it stays under control. Those food options you brought up work fine according to what someone requires at the time. My own experience lines up with yours by taking small bits from several items instead of overdoing a single type like lots of treats or a big chunk of dessert.

IronLantern24archiveJul 22

Every so often this occurs to me in the late evening.

CopperSignal27archiveJul 22

I've noticed that using bigger amounts together with extra versions of these meds cuts down on my appetite and stops me from wanting to continue with poor choices after just a small portion, though that seems pretty clear anyway. I began with any of them only once most of the pounds were already gone, so the focus stayed on my hunger levels, how often I wanted bad options, and whether the scale numbers went up or down. When keeping off a drop of more than half my starting body mass, combining one at certain levels with another made a difference, and including a third one added some benefit too. The main target is to adjust things until my hunger lines up with the calories needed to hold weight steady. This kind of method only matters when going after or holding onto really big reductions.
