Switched my scale to kilograms, which means nothing to me

5 replies5 peopleNov 30, 2025β˜† Follow
Summary

How can switching weight units on the scale reduce fixation on numbers during weight loss?

Users report that changing the scale to kilograms removed the emotional pull of familiar pound milestones like 165 or 160, which had caused stalling and overeating. The new numbers carried no special meaning, lowering stress while still allowing a clear target weight. A few others tried the reverse switch or prefer marking every small loss.

I picked up the suggestion from another user who talked about using stone and kilograms for weighing. Being from public schools, pounds are the only units that feel real to me, even though I use grams when cooking or making soap. On the scale in pounds I always get stuck at numbers ending in 5 or 0. It's all in my head; those become the targets I fixate on, and I get excited about hitting the next one only to stall and then sabotage myself by overeating. It kept happening at 170, 165, 160, 155 and so on. So I changed my scale to kilograms starting at 66.5 kg. Now I'm at 65.2 kg. I don't know the pound equivalent and please don't convert it for me. Without familiar numbers to obsess over, I'm not stressing myself out anymore, though I still have my target of 56.7 kg which is 125 pounds and right in the healthy BMI range.

Happy to see that switching units worked out for you 😁 It helped me too because neither pounds by themselves nor kilos ever felt like natural ways to think about body weight.

That's a good plan! I might try it myself.

Thanks for bringing it up. Changing the units like that really reduced a lot of the pressure I was feeling.

Every pound lost is a reason to celebrate for me πŸ™‚ and given how things are going now, there's plenty of time between each one πŸ˜‰

I tried switching units too, but in the opposite direction. Kilos are the ones that make sense to me and carry emotional weight. Pounds felt off because of the large figures and bigger steps between them. Using stone and pounds worked better yet still seemed too involved.
