Oprah Winfrey Admits She’ll Likely Stay on GLP-1s for Life After Quitting for a Year and Regaining 20 Pounds

7 replies8 peopleJan 2, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Do people need to stay on GLP-1 medications permanently after reaching their goal weight?

The thread treats GLP-1 drugs as lifelong maintenance tools similar to blood-pressure medicine, with several users describing their own plans to taper slowly by spacing doses rather than stopping abruptly. Oprah’s public admission of regaining weight after quitting is cited as both a cautionary example and a reason to credit her honesty. Cost and access barriers are noted as practical limits for many, while a few participants say celebrity news prompted them to start the medications themselves.

It looks like hubris that after struggling with weight her whole life she assumed she could simply stop the GLP-1 once she reached goal. Now she is spacing her own doses every 10-14 days to taper. Spacing administrations or lowering the dose gradually seems like a smarter maintenance strategy. You titrate up slowly while losing and should reverse that process when tapering off. Still, she deserves credit for publicly admitting she takes a GLP-1 and then owning the mistake.

These meds ought to be seen like ongoing treatments for hypertension or diabetes shots. Once started they stay necessary forever. Most folks resist depending on anything that long. My healthcare job made that part easy from day one since I grasped it right away. Expense ranks right up there too or even higher. Users often deal with steep manufacturer charges even when covered. Handling the full bill month after month just to hold weight and health steady ends up impossible for lots of them. Getting access the same way I do would make sticking with it no problem at all.

Why would anyone pay attention to what stars or other notable people are doing?

She always carries out his orders without any pushback at all.

It was hearing about Oprah and GLP-1s that finally got me looking into it myself. I’m thankful for these meds.

I knew going in that I would stay on a GLP for life. Realizing how bad I actually felt once I compared it to how good I felt on the medication was life-changing. I cannot picture going off and feeling that way again.

A very slow taper until off while adding natural GLP-boosting things like fiber and herbs would probably work better. I wish we knew what lowers GLP production in the first place. Antibiotics? Anesthesia? Hormone shifts? Psych meds? There must be a common factor. Maybe sugar both makes you gain and shuts off GLP production. The drug companies probably know but they are not saying.
