What not to do - Accidental Intramuscular

Summary

how to avoid hitting muscle when doing subcutaneous injections after losing fat

Users report accidental intramuscular hits during attempted subq shots in glutes or love handles after weight loss reduced fat padding. Pain in the muscle and down the leg can last days to a week. Some switched to shorter needles while others confirmed subq testosterone works with 29-30 gauge half-inch needles and cited studies showing it as a safe, steady alternative to IM.

Weight loss has left my glutes with less padding than they had a month back. For that compound I stick with a half-inch needle so it goes deep enough to skip the red welts. Last night I pinched the skin and still didn't think I reached muscle, yet I woke up with pain in the glute that ran down the leg and showed I had gone too deep. I don't have tips for anyone else, but the takeaway is to pay closer attention next time because that muscle ache is no fun.

Something similar happened to me recently during my usual weekly shot in the love-handle area. There is muscle there. It took a week to fade. I am moving to a shorter needle. Losing fat brings its own set of issues.

Wondering if this involves placing the needle beneath the skin for the therapy. It comes across as much more desirable than the intramuscular approach.

I share the surprise about the TRT shot being subq. Everyone I know who does those uses a long needle straight into the leg muscle. The only subq TRT I have come across is the pellets. Still, it is interesting to consider subq shots as another choice.

I do my Test C shots under the skin with a half-inch 29 gauge needle. The thirty gauge size still works okay though drawing the solution takes much longer and the soreness level feels roughly the same.

My views changed after forum members brought up under-the-skin shots. A handful of medical papers contain actual trial results on that method. One examined testosterone given beneath the skin and noted it offers a safe practical choice that patients can handle on their own which may boost how regularly they follow through. Another followed dose changes over a full year using an auto device for the oil-based version and found steady blood levels with only minor swings plus it proved safe easy to use and caused almost no discomfort. The third compared approaches in people transitioning and showed the under-the-skin route worked reliably caused fewer issues and was favored over the deeper muscle method.
