Looks like my extended stockpile of that med just went up in smoke.
An article just appeared describing a Chinese team trying to get a smart diabetes probiotic onto US shelves in about two years. The probiotic is called GIFT and is built to detect high blood sugar then release GLP-1 on its own. The gut already makes GLP-1 normally. Researchers modified an E. coli strain so a gene turns on or off depending on sugar levels, and the gene makes GLP-1 when sugar is high. This opens up a lot of possibilities. I also found a related study on glucose-responsive probiotics tested in mice and monkeys.
