I'm losing it over here. Prepared a new batch of tirz30 and the stuff just won't draw into the syringe when I try to filter it. Burned through four filters, two luer-lock syringes, and about six needles. Totally stuck and nothing online gave any useful fix.

Sounds like the filter itself is the issue. You draw the liquid into the syringe first with nothing attached. After that you add the filter plus a new needle and push everything through into the vial or cartridge.

Oh wow, I've done this before and now I feel ridiculous. My thyroid meds got changed recently and I swear they leave me scattered and unable to focus on basic steps.

That actually gives a straightforward answer to why we never filter into the syringe instead of out of it. Even with a fresh syringe the pull would still be tougher than the push. Someone might argue we need the filter last to catch every bacterium, but I'll just tell them to pipe down.

That lunch-money line cracked me up. The reason pulling failed is that these syringe filters only work in one direction, which is exactly what they're supposed to do. Most filtering jobs, especially sterilization, need that one-way design. Bidirectional versions exist but I've never needed one.

Your lunch money stays safe then, because that detail is useful. I had been wondering why the syringe's vacuum couldn't pull the liquid through when pushing works fine, but it turns out the filter simply won't allow flow in that direction at all.

Same thing happened to me. Switching from a 5 ml syringe to a 2 ml one made the push much easier because of the narrower barrel.

I was thinking about trying to draw through the filter too, but I'll skip it now. It would be convenient if it worked, yet the one-way design explains why it doesn't. Pushing the plunger gives more force than creating a vacuum anyway.

I tested that approach and it didn't work either. Ended up wasting product and decided filtering just isn't worth the spills for me anymore.

I had the same thought at first. A coffee filter can be flipped inside out and still work, so the idea of a reversible filter made sense until the one-way nature was pointed out.

My problem turned out to be the needle length rather than the filter. First attempt at reconstituting with filtering and venting, I followed a video that recommended both 1.5-inch and 0.5-inch needles. The longer one wouldn't draw anything back out of the vial until I swapped to the shorter one. Two sizes aren't necessary and the video seems to push extra purchases. Other beginner mistakes included struggling to remove the short needle without pliers and realizing my 10 cc syringes are too large for accurate dosing.
