Food noise vs. compulsive/boredom eating

22 replies18 peopleOct 19, 2025☆ Follow
Summary

How do GLP-1 drugs affect compulsive or boredom eating versus typical enjoyment of food and alcohol?

Users describe these medications as creating a clear stop signal once satisfied, reducing the appeal of extra portions, snacks, or drinks even when food tastes good. Mental preoccupation with upcoming meals fades for most, though a few still plan or think about food without the urge to act on it. Tirzepatide and retatrutide are compared on physical versus mental effects, with alcohol cravings often disappearing quickly. Some note lingering mental patterns that satiety alone does not resolve.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Some reject the term food noise as overused while others see it as a distinct real phenomenon separate from boredom eating.

Still open

Whether adding contrave helps when mental food thoughts persist after physical satiety is achieved on a GLP-1.

Nothing here is advice.

Haven't started looking into glp-1 peptides yet, but after finishing my third beer and another helping at a family meal, this feels different from food noise. I'm enjoying how it tastes and feels, and I want more. Anyone who's used sema, tirz or reta have thoughts on handling this kind of overeating or drinking?

BlueWillow27archiveOct 19, 2025

Before tirz I never turned down a chance to eat like that. Now I stop once I feel satisfied because the food stops appealing to me. Alcohol also stopped appealing, both in taste and how it makes me feel, even though I used to enjoy it a lot. The constant thinking about the next meal or snack was separate and more front-of-mind, like fixating on chips and cookies right at 8pm at work.

I avoid the phrase food noise because it gets shouted whenever anyone feels the slightest hunger. On tirz I can choose a high-protein low-calorie day with vegetables and meat. I can still create cravings by dwelling on high-calorie foods I want, but if I simply avoid that thinking I stay fine and it does not push past my own choice.

It becomes simpler to say no or later, even while shopping for groceries, and to take smaller portions. Half a sandwich can feel as filling as a whole one.

PlainSignal69archiveOct 20, 2025

I grew up being told to finish everything on my plate and that stuck with me. By thirty I had no sense of normal portions and just kept eating until the plate was empty. A beer with the meal made seconds and thirds easy. About six weeks ago I began reta and within the first week I hit a firm stopping point regardless of what remained on the plate. Eating faster now leaves me uncomfortably full and bloated, which never happened before, so I am basically on half portions. My wife has started eating less too even though she is not on it.

SlowKettle22archiveOct 20, 2025

Tirz made it impossible to eat enough to meet my macros and would have stopped the behavior described. With reta I can still eat if I want to and it does not affect physical hunger much, but it removed the habit of eating just because or thinking about food for no reason. Both drugs stopped that pattern.

WryCompass39archiveOct 20, 2025

Before these drugs I would fast, drop ten to fifteen pounds, then regain it all. Fasting taught me to treat food as unimportant, and now tirz makes it easy not to crave because I use the same approach and the medication helps quiet the food thoughts.

SharpCompass15archiveOct 20, 2025

You would likely enjoy the first plate but stop at about half the usual amount and skip a second plate. If the food is exceptional you might take a little more but then pass on dessert for a while. A second beer or glass of wine becomes unlikely. Sweets can still appeal but one cookie is enough instead of going back for more. Food noise never matched my experience, but the urge to snack or graze in the evenings does. I simply think about food less overall, shop less often, and buy only what I need without extras.

QuietAlder20archiveOct 20, 2025

Long-time members in these groups react strongly against phrases like weight loss journey or food noise. Tirz removes the constant focus on the next snack or meal and also makes it physically hard to keep eating once full. As someone in recovery from alcohol who used naltrexone, I find tirz far better at reducing alcohol cravings, sometimes going days without even thinking about a drink. Early research is noting these drugs help with addiction, and I have seen that effect personally.

I do not mind if food noise is a popular term because it describes something real I did not realize I had. Looking back I spent a surprising amount of time deciding what and when to eat, then wanting a bit more or planning the next meal or snack even when it was not needed. Travel for work made it worse with constant worry about snacks and airport food. The food was usually decent so my weight stayed manageable, but the nonstop mental focus on eating feels depressing in hindsight. Now I finish a meal and stop thinking about food, sometimes even delaying a meal because I got absorbed in something else and forgot.

AmberMarble84archiveOct 25, 2025

Food noise is exhausting because before these drugs I thought about food constantly and used a lot of mental energy deciding what and when to eat, which led to overeating. Now I still think about food and get hungry, which feels normal and relieving, but eating brings no reward so I can stop whenever I choose.

KeenLantern39archiveOct 25, 2025

One week into treatment and no weight lost yet, though that was not expected. I can still eat but do not really feel like it and get full after a small portion. Once constipation improves I might drop a few pounds. Since day one there has been zero interest in alcohol. I am keeping protein high and staying hydrated with whey isolate mixed with water and some inulin fiber, and so far everything is going well.

KeenPebble77archiveNov 11, 2025

I shop for a family of seven and can now go to the store without having eaten and avoid filling the cart with whatever looks appealing.

IronThistle42archiveDec 14, 2025

It sounds like you are simply very bored. Joining a gym could use up some of that mental energy.

That could be it. I already walk an hour six days a week and use an arm trainer four or five times a week, but lately I have had little motivation for things I used to enjoy such as video games.

That is actually a known side effect, look up anhedonia.

BlueWillow27archiveDec 14, 2025

I experienced anhedonia, which I mistook for fatigue, for the first two or three days after each weekly shot during the first eight weeks on reta. Splitting the dose helped a little but the flat feeling remained. This past week the blahs disappeared and I had plenty of energy and motivation. It is only one person's experience, but others have reported the same thing fading after a few months. Keep in touch with your doctor in case it is unrelated to the medication, but it may pass on its own.

WarmHarbour28archiveDec 15, 2025

For over sixty years I was taught to clean the plate three times a day and that is difficult to change. I am not the one cooking so I have to upset someone or feel completely miserable to stop. It is a real trainer and I keep putting myself through it even though the more tirz I take the more miserable I become, though not from side effects. I can tolerate misery but it is pointless.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I plan to contact my PCP because the telehealth doctor is willing to prescribe contrave but the comments here suggest getting another opinion first.

Is this the kind of eating that happens every day?

It looks like the original poster has moved on to other topics.

Darn, a good rant went to waste.
