Oil is a standard component in vacuum pumps and this practice has been around without being noteworthy. Residential freeze dryers feature oil sumps on the pumps they use as well.

Yeah, and beyond that quite a few medicines cleared by regulators get freeze dried in that manner before being mixed up again at separate sites. Most of us never even realize it happens.

Pumps without oil exist and leave less mess behind. Large scale drug production for delicate items such as certain proteins or shots probably picks those models to limit any dirt getting inside. Pumps that rely on oil probably add a filter to catch spray when making high grade products. Still I wonder if the unofficial processors working out of basic setups bother with that step and whether leftover oil hurts how well the treatment performs or adds unwanted material for the person using it. Maybe someone should check with that one contact about how often the issue actually shows up.

My impression is that only a handful of messy workshops are manufacturing everything like this. For the less common varieties it could even be in private sheds. This leads me to question the true source of it all has anybody figured that out?

My compact freeze-drying unit sits on the workbench. The company that built it wants oil safe for food inside the vacuum pump. Agricultural retailers carry the stuff because dairy farms rely on it to run their milking equipment.

Even if swallowing them seems fine there are probably extra chemicals mixed in to keep them stable and working well and those might mess with the peptides somehow. It's just one more unknown thing in what those HPLC spikes are made of that nobody bothers checking.
