Eli Lilly’s new medication for alcoholism?

36 replies28 peopleNov 3, 2025☆ Follow
Summary

Is there a new GLP-1 drug in phase 3 trials specifically for alcoholism and how does it compare to existing ones?

The discussion centers on a Lilly compound entering phase 3 testing for alcohol use disorder, with multiple users reporting that current GLP-1 agonists sharply reduce or eliminate alcohol cravings and intake. Anecdotes cover semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide producing similar effects, sometimes stronger than naltrexone, though results can fade with life stress. Preclinical data and reanalyses of existing studies are cited as supporting evidence.

Which specific GLP-1 agent works best for alcohol use disorder and whether the benefit persists long-term after stopping the medication

I saw a short video about a new GLP drug for alcoholism heading into phase 3. I lost the name and wanted to know what sets it apart from the rest and why it would target alcoholism specifically. Searches turned up nothing so maybe it isn’t real. I’m looking into this for people dealing with alcohol issues. If it is real but not yet available, does anyone know which current GLP seems strongest for cutting alcohol use?

LevelThistle83archiveNov 3, 2025

There’s some data showing GLP-1 drugs influence dopamine pathways, similar to how they quiet food noise, and that effect seems to extend to alcohol cravings. The exact mechanism for alcohol use disorder isn’t clear to me but I recall reading about it. Current options like tirzepatide might help with alcohol issues too.

NorthMarble60archiveNov 3, 2025

Not sure about alcoholism specifically, but once I began reta my urge to drink disappeared. It felt strange; I can look at nice IPAs in the fridge and feel zero pull toward them.

There’s plenty of talk and similar reports out there. My first post here was actually about this. Friends have described the same thing. One thread explores it further but I also saw mention of a dedicated drug for it, though that might have been inaccurate.

KeenMeadow10archiveNov 3, 2025

Sema cut my alcohol cravings a lot at the start and let me stay sober for a stretch, roughly a 90 percent drop from before. Later some tough events weakened that effect. I still drink less overall, maybe half my old amount, and almost daily again. I started it for metabolic reasons but the real motivation was heading toward a dangerous level of liquor use. If you find the name of that specific one I’d like to know too.

Exactly. Lilly is exploring extra uses for tirzepatide to extend its patent life. I saw the same pattern when Allergan ran studies on Botox for new indications.

BlueMarble68archiveNov 3, 2025

It showed up as one of the top search hits. Maybe Brenipatide?

CopperSignal27archiveNov 3, 2025

Lilly is studying Brenipatide for alcohol use disorder with a phase 3 trial underway, though results aren’t out yet. I was surprised they’re developing a separate drug when all the GLP-1s seem to show this effect, but maybe they want to avoid mixing signals with tirzepatide. It isn’t proven enough for routine recommendation yet, but lots of early data and study reanalyses point to lower alcohol and drug use, fewer hospital visits, and fewer overdoses. If the current trials confirm it, this class could become the strongest treatment available for alcoholism and possibly other substance issues too. No clear science yet on which agent is best, but both tirzepatide and semaglutide show the effect in studies and in many user reports here.

Same here. I used to get bored and head to the pub for pints. Now even when bored the thought of going for a beer just doesn’t interest me anymore.

AmberMarble84archiveNov 3, 2025

Are you thinking of Brenipatide? It’s also being tested for asthma I believe.

I ran multiple searches including with two different AIs and found nothing, so thanks for the name.

Yes, that’s the one. As I said earlier the searches didn’t turn it up for me either. Not sure how I missed it. Appreciate the help.

Tirz wiped out my urge to drink. I’m closing in on three years sober now. These meds worked better for me than naltrexone.

Totally agree. Since starting I haven’t wanted a drink at all. I’m at six and a half months with zero alcohol.

NorthMarble42archiveNov 3, 2025

On reta I only feel like drinking if a certain flavor sounds good or I’m on vacation during social hours. Even then the amount is much lower because I get buzzed faster. It used to be hard with my husband being into craft beer and my own stash in the garage fridge. Now if I feel off I just sleep or do something else instead.

WarmHarbour28archiveFeb 2

I saw some guy on TV promoting something with three letters, looked like a compounding clinic ad. Also used to enjoy martinis but tirz took that away along with seventy pounds, so no complaints here.

WarmHarbour15archiveFeb 3

I used to look forward to getting hammered every Saturday and would sneak extra hard liquor. Started reta in June and now have zero interest. Haven’t been drunk since July. We’ll open wine and sometimes I don’t even finish the first glass before dumping it out.

Since starting reta I have zero interest in alcohol. Tried some on Christmas and couldn’t really feel it, then just felt generally lousy afterward.

Brenipatide is being studied for tobacco use disorder, asthma, obesity, alcoholism, bipolar, schizophrenia, depression, cardiovascular issues, liver problems, metabolic conditions, osteoarthritis pain, and more, with a once-monthly dose.

It’s wild to think where peptides will be in ten years. Who knew these compounds could address so many things? Waiting for the next one that knocks out cancer in a month or two.

Hey, my smoking is now called tobacco use disorder, not just a dumb habit. I’m a victim!

Doctor: do you ever masturbate? Forum member: at least once a day. After-visit note: patient has chronic masturbation disorder. When asked about counseling replied he’d rather have a thick Latina.

Reta ended my twenty-five-year weed habit after the first shot and knocked out my TCG gambling habit at the same time.

Wow. And once a month? I’d want this for my seventy-nine-year-old mother.

Finally something I’ll put on the do-not-try list.

Tirz has been very good at lowering the dopamine reward I get from things. Foods I once craved now look unappealing or even sickening. When I do eat I naturally want healthier options. It feels like it could quiet all sorts of addictive patterns including drugs and alcohol. Pretty impressive.

RustMarble22archiveApr 13

The phase-3 Brenipatide study is still recruiting according to the trials registry. It’s listed as a study in participants with moderate-to-severe alcohol use disorder.

Update: in one week it will be a full year. Yay me.

SlowLedger42archiveApr 13
↳ replying to @RustMarble22

That could be tough for trial participants once it ends, since they stop getting the medication and would have to wait for approval.

LevelTimber10archiveApr 13

I’m looking forward to that. Tirz hasn’t touched my daily ecig use though. Nicotine is still a big weakness and one day I’ll be ready to quit it for good.

CopperMeadow83archiveApr 14

Is this going to appear in the gray market?

SlowHarbour21archiveApr 14
↳ replying to @SlowLedger42

But if participants have been off alcohol for a while won’t the cravings already be gone by the end? Might be a naive question since I don’t drink much myself.

SlowLedger42archiveApr 14
↳ replying to @SlowHarbour21

When you’ve gone six months without something like pop tarts do the cravings stay gone? Every recovering alcoholic I’ve spoken with says even after ten years it’s still a daily struggle on some level, or at least that’s what they tell people.
