Wait, now I gotta worry about my fingernails falling off?? 😳

Summary

Do GLP-1 drugs cause fingernails to detach or other nail problems?

The thread questions a new study's claim of 39% of GLP-1 users experiencing nail detachment, pointing out its self-reported cross-sectional design prevents proving causation. Participants largely attribute any nail or hair changes to rapid weight loss and nutritional shortfalls rather than the medication, noting similar effects after bariatric surgery. Several share that they have seen no such issues among users they know, while a few discuss GHK-Cu as helpful for nail strength and skin without unwanted side effects.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether the reported nail changes are caused by the drugs themselves or simply by fast weight loss and diet gaps

Long-term confirmation of any direct GLP-1 link to nails independent of weight loss

A new report claims 39 percent of people taking these GLP meds are dealing with fingernails coming loose. Weird that I haven't run into even one mention of it before. The piece points out that when you notice a body change after starting a med you naturally wonder if the drug is to blame, and the same goes for nails.

RustTimber42archive17h

It says about half the people already had nail trouble before they began the meds, so the 39 percent after starting actually looks like an improvement for some. The whole thing is based on people just describing their own symptoms at one moment with no doctor exams or follow-through, so it can't prove the drugs caused anything. The article keeps admitting they didn't track real data or have proper checks, which makes the whole piece feel off.

AmberCinder18archive16h

Yeah the report popped up everywhere today but it was all self-reported so that limits it. What stood out to me is I know plenty of folks on these meds and none have mentioned nail changes like pitting or anything you'd expect from missing nutrients. I probably wouldn't spot it on myself anyway since working with clay wrecks my nails and I'm used to them looking rough.

GLP news spreads fast whether it's good or bad. Hair loss from quick weight drop makes it plausible nails could be affected too, but I still haven't come across any actual cases.

AmberCinder18archive14h

I just quit a dumb Facebook GLP group after getting jumped on for pointing out these things come from fast weight loss, not the GLP itself. Same thing happens after bariatric surgery. Apparently that's not allowed there.

After a few months of GHK-Cu my nails feel tough as steel. If one ever came off it would ring like a coin hitting the floor.

I used to be in half a dozen of those Facebook GLP groups and today's was the last one. If it weren't for a couple other groups I actually like and moderate, I'd drop the whole platform.

SlowHarbour21archive13h

Within a year there will be stories claiming GLP-1 users are losing other body parts too, but only with the grey peptides of course.

Oh were you the one saying forty pounds a month isn't realistic and that people should still eat and drink every single day?

LevelTimber64archive11h

I had to double-check whether this was just AI-generated nonsense. Turns out it wasn't.

GreyLantern71archive11h

My nails have always been on the thin side but so far they're holding up fine.

I have a kit but haven't started yet. Being on a once-weekly shot has made me lazy about adding more injections. Also a bit worried about growing hair where I don't want it.

I hadn't heard about random extra hair showing up. I know AHK-Cu is aimed at hair growth specifically.

I've always had thin nails too and they've gotten thicker with the GHK-Cu, though probably still not enough to grow them long. I don't think unwanted hair growth is something to worry about. I haven't seen any of that.

Good to know. A woman on YouTube said she had spent a lot on laser hair removal before and the hair came back after she started GHK-Cu. Could have been coincidence or hormones but it made me hesitate.

I've had plenty of laser and electrolysis too but nothing alarming has shown up. I've been on GHK-Cu since around April with only short breaks, now at 3 mg a day after starting at 2 mg. Mostly I notice better skin. I'll say something if I think any unwanted hair is returning.

More likely just a coincidence. Laser hair removal on the face is known to sometimes push hair growth elsewhere on the face.

Same here. My nails used to tear if I just looked at them. Now they grow fast.

SlowSignal67archive8h

Glad I haven't had any nails peeling off yet.

Reminds me of an article that was supposed to be about the risks of compounded GLP-1s but turned out to be more about people being bad at math.

Thank you, this is good to know. What kind of skin changes did you notice?

Wow that really does suck about hair showing up in new spots. I guess nothing stays permanent after all.

PlainQuill85archive5h

This study feels like it lacks actual studies. It basically says nothing is certain. A lot of my friends who had bariatric surgery ran into nail and hair problems when they skipped vitamins. It's tied to fast weight loss and missing nutrients, not the GLP itself.

↳ replying to @PatientMarble52

You should try a keratin supplement. Hair and nails are both made of keratin. I tried one years ago and never stopped. Mine grew out nicely and people were surprised they were real when I told them.

↳ replying to @GreyLantern71

My skin feels velvety and supple now. My face has a more even porcelain tone.

Wait, you mean like this? I have PsA and only the nails on one hand are doing this. It started after I shot myself in the finger with a brad nailer. When I checked online it sounded like an immune response to the injury, so it's hard to blame the GLP for it.
