How long have you taken Reta without a break?

9 replies9 peopleJul 19, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

How long can people stay on Reta continuously without losing effectiveness or developing new long-term side effects?

Users report continuous use ranging from 7 months to roughly 2 years, with effectiveness holding steady even at higher doses. Most note that initial side effects fade after a couple of months, and several have successfully lowered doses for maintenance while still controlling appetite. Some mention plans to continue indefinitely or eventually taper off after major weight loss.

Curious how long others have stayed on Reta without stopping. Wondering if it loses power after extended periods and whether new side effects show up beyond the usual ones during the first months and dose increases. Noticed some people lower their dose for maintenance instead. Hoping for feedback especially from those with the most experience.

Been on it steadily for 10 months and it still works at whatever dose I use. The main side effects disappeared after the first couple of months. Went up to 12 mg but have come down to 8 mg and want to settle at 6 mg for the long haul, though early tests showed hunger returning by injection day at that level. Might split the dose once I reach 6 mg to keep things steadier.

I split my dose as well. Only been using it for a month so far, but it seems to make a difference.

Once I reached 4 mg while increasing, a single weekly shot worked fine. Coming back down it hasn't been as reliable, which makes sense after being on higher amounts for a long time.

I view it as a very long-term, probably permanent treatment unless someone wasn't obese to begin with. Fewer long-term studies exist for reta, but sema and tirz show clear lasting benefits that should apply here too, so remaining on it isn't harmful and may lower risks for diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, strokes, cancers, and possibly dementia. The benefits are greater the more overweight or unhealthy someone is. Some aging-marker data even suggests these drugs slow aging itself. For those who are overweight or obese with health concerns, staying on it helps, and higher doses may be preferable if risk is elevated. Beyond that, the goal with any GLP is usually to lose the weight once and then stay on a dose that keeps it off.

Seven months with no breaks and it's worked well for me with almost no side effects. Sleep is the only noticeable change, and getting up at 4 AM might just be routine now. Did four weeks at each dose level, starting at 2 mg and moving up to 9 mg. Just began a maintenance dose of 6 mg and will see how it goes. Planning to stay on this stuff indefinitely.

Ten months of weekly use, starting at 1 mg and reaching 8 mg. Stopped for 16 days after developing a large kidney stone that took time to pass. Just passed it and expect to restart at 4 or 6 mg. Have lost over 90 lb so I'm looking for a maintenance level. During the break my weight held steady aside from fluid from the stone, and appetite didn't become unmanageable, which is encouraging for possibly stopping someday.

Around two years total for me, with the last year and a half at maintenance using the same dose but less often. Planning to reduce the dose a bit this week since I'm still dropping weight unintentionally every six months and am now about 10 lb under my target.

Congrats, that's a good problem to have. Your effort clearly paid off.

Look into adding the oral GLP-1 option alongside the lower dose. It has worked well for me so far because the two target receptors a bit differently. Also aiming for low-dose maintenance long term, since everything I've seen suggests that stopping completely can reduce how well it works if you ever restart.
