Retatrutide and mood changes

19 replies16 peopleDec 27, 2025☆ Follow
Summary

Does retatrutide cause anhedonia or emotional flattening, and is this side effect temporary or hard to manage at low starting doses?

Users report mixed experiences with retatrutide and mood. Some notice no changes or even improved mood from better physical health, while others describe a dull or flat feeling that starts around 1-2 mg and can reduce motivation or excitement without full depression. Several found the effect mild enough to continue or tied it to early diet adjustment rather than the drug itself, and a few saw it resolve after a few weeks.

Whether the dull feeling qualifies as true anhedonia or is mainly a temporary adjustment to missing food-related dopamine

Planning to begin retatrutide right after the holidays and would like to hear about mood experiences. Reports mention possible anhedonia or emotional flattening. From what others have seen, does this side effect tend to fade or stick around? Is it usually something that can be handled or does it sometimes become too much? Concerned about ending up depressed and unmotivated. Any ways to lessen this effect? Starting at 0.5 mg weekly, so wondering if the issue shows up at that level. Really need to begin but worried about this possible side effect.

0.5 is a tiny dose. Answering the question, I don't know. Other meds I take might be causing low mood so it's hard to separate whether retatrutide is involved.

On retatrutide for seven months with no mood changes at all. Never even came across this side effect mentioned before, though searching hard enough turns up all kinds of possible effects. 0.5 mg is pretty low and 1.0 mg is more typical to start. Being cautious is fine, but that dose should feel comfortable. Most people end up pleased with results.

Anhedonia is real and unpleasant. Felt it strongly on tirzepatide at 11 mg but not on retatrutide now at 8 mg. Hard to predict how it will go for anyone else, so trying it is the only way to find out.

Only anecdotal, but no negative mood effects noticed. Actually in a better mood overall because of improvements in many areas: smaller body, less joint pain, better skin, and reflux resolved. Started at 2 mg and reached 5 mg after four months.

Have experienced that to some degree. Not exactly depression, more a sense of not feeling like doing things even when they should be done. Started making lists and pushing through until items are finished. Still a small trade-off compared with the other benefits from retatrutide.

Many doctors view GLP-1 analogues as having a mild mood-altering effect, and anhedonia is commonly reported. Not sure it has to mean lower mood though. It can feel more like less impulsiveness and less need to prove things to others. One downside can be reduced drive to take action.

No mood changes directly from retatrutide. Low energy early on while figuring out diet, macros, and calorie deficit. Once diet was fixed, energy and mood both improved. Gym four or five times a week helped a lot too.

In that case the low mood and fatigue were only at the start? How long did they last and at what doses?

Correct, notes show fatigue and low mood during the first three weeks on retatrutide at 2 mg once weekly. Got strict on tracking macros in week three with intake at 40 percent protein, 40 percent carbs, 20 percent fats. By the end of week three felt good enough to return to the gym, which then improved mood and energy further.

Helpful details for perspective. Everyone can differ but the specifics of the experience are useful.

22 days on retatrutide, started at 0.5 mg twice weekly and now at 1.5 mg twice weekly. Mood changes appeared quickly. Not really depressed, just a bit dull, similar to what antidepressants might feel like. Can function normally but missing the usual dopamine hits from daily life. Oddly, more motivated at the gym.

No major mood changes noticed, though possibly a little more sensitive to things and aware of emotions. Previously an emotional eater, now without the dopamine hit from food so emotions stand out more. Viewing it as positive and learning other ways to handle emotions instead of turning to sugary foods.

Depends on the person and how strongly it affects them. With previous body chemistry, semaglutide at a microdose once caused anhedonia that dipped into very dark places unlike usual MDD, so it was stopped. Tirzepatide was better, still some flatness but not a real problem if life felt more present. Reactions are extremely individual. Some see depression fully remit while others say no one could react that badly to a small dose. Sharing one personal case. Likely some predisposition or sensitivity. Glad for starting slow. Recent endocrinology adjustments mean restarting tirzepatide soon.

Also had this feeling for a couple weeks. Started low at 0.5 mg then 1 mg now 2 mg, about four weeks at each level. Noticeable at 1 mg and a bit more at 2 mg. Hope it fades because excited about weight loss results. Feels like numb or dull mood with some lack of motivation, yet a bit more chill during stressful situations, which might be positive.

AmberCompass43archiveFeb 20

On retatrutide eight months, started very low at 0.5 mg and planning to stay at 3 mg or even lower. Learned about emotional flatness after posting about lost sex drive, and it matched exactly. Not unhappy, kids still make me laugh, but generally not excited about things. A last-minute Christmas trip would normally bring excitement but there was none, just blah about upcoming events. Not sad, just not excited. Lost libido has been tough, one reason for possibly cutting back. On the positive side, stressful situations do not affect as much as before.

WarmThistle66archiveFeb 21

Could it be diet related? Getting enough nutrients and staying hydrated enough?

SteadyQuill55archiveFeb 21

Not sure about retatrutide but it happens on tirzepatide. Suspect that once science looks into it the finding will be it is not real anhedonia, just the adjustment period when someone used to getting dopamine from food no longer gets those hits and feels confused and dull until new sources are found. That was the experience here, now playing kalimba, learning tongue drum since December, and feeling excited again.

BrightMeadow15archiveFeb 27

As opposed to fake anhedonia? Calling a feeling not a real feeling does not make sense. Everyone is basically chemical soup starting from different states. Heads up that anhedonia is part of MDD diagnosis, so while flat feelings are minor for some, others could face a much steeper drop. Worth keeping an eye on because it could become an issue. Maybe track it on a list if monitoring research.

Did not experience it personally, but read that anxiety attacks can occur on retatrutide. Will look for those posts in the FB group and follow up here.
