Many physicians recommend ferrous sulfate, yet after weight-loss surgery or with age stomach acid may be too low for proper absorption, so polysaccharide iron complex is needed and apparently at higher amounts than one tablet three times weekly. My own hematologist had me take it on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday along with at least 200 mg of vitamin C each time during my infusions last fall. I previously used it daily without the vitamin C and am awaiting six-month labs to decide if two tablets on those days are required. My sister skips hematology and endocrinology visits, so her iron is checked only once a year, which is why levels drop low enough for transfusions. She asks my input for others but dismisses it for herself despite my nursing background, which is frustrating.
