10k steps from day job

6 replies5 peopleFeb 21, 2026β˜† Follow
Summary

How do active versus sedentary day jobs affect hitting daily step goals?

One user credits their job with easily meeting step targets and skipping gym cardio. Others contrast this with desk-bound roles that only boost steps during travel, while recalling past delivery work that produced 25k steps daily but caused knee problems requiring replacements. Current routines now average far lower after switching to driving routes.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether past delivery work was sustainable long-term due to physical wear

Nothing here is advice.

My regular job makes hitting the step goal pretty straightforward. I skip the cardio at the gym now, lol

Way to go! Sounds like a perfect situation all around for you. Sometimes I imagine working as a parcel carrier and being able to consume anything while keeping my figure steady from the constant movement and carrying loads. Doubt my physique could manage even one shift at it though... Perhaps back when I was three decades younger. Sadly, my regular work keeps me stuck in a chair for hours daily staring at a screen. During my trips away from home, which happen about twice weekly, I rack up plenty of walking distance, yet that gets balanced out by the drinks I have in the waiting area at the airport before flying πŸ˜‚.

I once considered picking up an extra gig hauling boxes onto the rigs before sunrise, with a chuckle. Yet after hearing all the gripes from fellow handlers about their aching knees and such, I dropped the idea.

Before my daily step count reached twenty-five thousand. Both of my knees got replaced three years back. These days I spend time driving through rural areas so my weekly average sits at about eleven thousand five hundred steps.

Dang getting 25k daily blows my mind completely. How on earth did you land that gig? Spending twelve hours working daily only brings me close to 20k.

Sounds like they traded a twenty five thousand dollar job for countryside driving work, probably a postal employee who took a country delivery position.

My job has me operating that oversized brown delivery vehicle. Someone brought it up earlier in the thread, haha. Postal workers likely handle twice the load.
