Vulnerable Question-are we doing a band-aid at every injection site these days?

49 replies42 peopleMay 1, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Do people put band-aids on every injection site after daily shots?

The large majority of participants report never using band-aids after injections. They clean the skin with alcohol before and after the shot, then move on, noting that the small needles rarely cause bleeding that needs covering. A couple of voices suggest leaving a band-aid on if desired or if bleeding occurs, but most find the practice unnecessary and potentially more irritating than the injection itself.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

One participant insists band-aids should be used and left on until they fall off in the shower, while nearly everyone else sees them as pointless.

Nothing here is advice.

Hey, even if it makes me sound like an infection risk waiting to happen, now that I'm getting poked multiple times a day I have to ask: does everyone cover every injection spot with a band-aid these days? Pulling them off hurts pretty badly when I'm hitting three sites some days. What's the normal routine for someone turning into a human pincushion?

PlainAlder11archiveMay 1

I have never done that.

RustBeacon82archiveMay 1

You mean actual band-aids? I do three to five shots a day and have never put one on. I just clean the spot with alcohol, do the shot, swipe again with alcohol, and I'm finished.

No need, just do the shot and keep going. It's not intravenous so nothing is going to leak out of the hole. A second alcohol wipe afterward is fine if it helps you feel better about it.

SteadyMeadow70archiveMay 1

I never even considered it, so no band-aids here either.

PlainAlder11archiveMay 1

I don't even know if we have any around.

PlainCompass54archiveMay 1

I never use Band-Aids. If I happen to nick a small vein and it bleeds, I just press on it for a minute.

BlueSignal49archiveMay 1

Occasionally my laziness wins out and I skip swabbing the spot with alcohol first 😁

NorthSparrow68archiveMay 1

Those count as marks worth displaying with pride if I had them haha

SharpAnchor92archiveMay 1

Adhesive strips deliver actual medical results exclusively when decorated with animated characters. That's what the evidence indicates.

SteadyQuill55archiveMay 1

An old flame once mentioned that needing nothing more than a basic patch probably means skipping it altogether, and the remark really struck a chord with me.

Hold up, these Minions adhesive strips must go in the bin? 😟😆

LevelLedger10archiveMay 1

I never cover injection spots with any kind of patch. Other minor issues that might need covering would just get electrical tape instead. 😉

Sure, the idea sounds reasonable enough, yet my little one refuses to listen anyway. Five children and rural living lead to plenty of minor scrapes, which explains why I keep several big boxes of adhesive strips around the place.

CopperSparrow10archiveMay 1

I see no reason for using a bandage. It's not good to cause bleeding either. If blood does appear though, use a cotton swab to apply pressure and move it about. The spot will heal over very quickly.

ClearBramble44archiveMay 1

There's no blood at all so I don't think a bandage is necessary.

NorthBramble68archiveMay 1

I never bother with any covering since this only involves taking blood samples. The skin gets cleaned using a disinfectant cloth right before the process starts and again right after it ends.

LevelKettle69archiveMay 1

Hardly ever does any blood show up for me. Shots I've received from a physician have sometimes called for a small covering afterward, but only with thicker needles or when delivered into muscle.

QuietLedger67archiveMay 2

It's tough spotting the needle mark so I don't know where the bandage belongs 😆

IronLantern24archiveMay 2

Unless a cut keeps bleeding nonstop I skip using any bandages whatsoever.

QuietTimber26archiveMay 2

Yeah I always stick to nothing except a fast alcohol swab right before and once more after the jab.

SlowHarbour21archiveMay 2

I put those on without fail and let the shower water remove them on its own rather than pulling. Having a bunch ready makes me feel secure.

ClearWillow59archiveMay 2

The spot gets cleaned using an alcohol wipe first. When needed I press a cotton pad gently for just moments. Only that. My daughter at age two had lots of bright bandages which she wore like jewelry. Making it playful was enjoyable. 😉

CopperSignal27archiveMay 2

I don't think it's really necessary most of the time. On the odd chance that blood keeps flowing instead of halting right away, then a bandage works fine, though the needles' tiny size means that almost never occurs.

WarmQuill37archiveMay 2

Bleeding needs to keep going past a moment or two before I even consider reaching for a bandage. So far my jabs haven't been rough enough to hit that point. I wipe the spot with an alcohol pad first and end up without any trouble.

KeenHarbour58archiveMay 2

It's hard for me to picture covering such a minuscule puncture with any kind of dressing right away. I almost never apply those things myself. They tend to trap grime right up against the injury, in my view. I skip cleaning the area with antiseptic beforehand too. The habit persists mostly because of societal norms. When the surface is already clean, it's probably not required, and some studies point to keeping the natural protective layer intact instead.

SteadyWillow85archiveJun 10

I stumbled upon a thread and initially considered using adhesive strips. Once I did the initial shot though, it seemed like peeling off the strip would be more painful than the needle itself. Haha. So I just swab with rubbing alcohol on either side of the process.

Never bother with sanitizer ahead of time or afterward. That tiny puncture barely counts since I end up with deeper gashes from tending the garden daily. Haven't kicked the bucket so far.

Hey! What about Snoopy ones? The beagle keeps me safe!😆

LevelTimber64archiveJun 10

I'd love to stick a cute bandage on my rear each morning, yet only my spouse would notice it anyway. I clean the skin, do the shot, clean once more, then head out.

PatientFenwick55archiveJun 10

I don't usually notice where I stuck the needle afterward, even for muscle shots with a longer thinner needle. I clean the area first with an alcohol wipe, do the injection, then go about my routine. Trying to wipe it again afterward sometimes caused irritation, which is why I dropped that step. The upper leg always ends up with some bleeding and soreness later no matter the angle or needle choice, so I skip that spot entirely. A bandage only comes into play if the spot shows and I'm leaving the house soon after.

Haha yeah I get it. Trimming weeds while wearing shorts shreds my skin though I skip long pants during warm weather except when a big job is coming up. The pin beats jeans for hours on end.

LevelAlder34archiveJun 11

I always wait until the skin is totally dry after an alcohol swab at the injection site otherwise my risk for an ISR rises quite a bit.

NorthCompass85archiveJun 12

I always clean the spot with alcohol both ahead of time and afterward. The idea of sticking on that many bandages each week just seems impossible though.

I've never taken the receiving part when having sex with another man. The pitching role turns out quite different though! 🤩

WarmAnchor46archiveJun 12

Might your choice of thick needle explain the need? Then that follows naturally. Including candy as a reward for yourself as well? Seems considerate. Yet the reason remains clear.

My location is Kansas though questions about it aren't wanted. I've fallen far behind on keeping up with posts.

LevelPebble88archiveJun 25

I steer clear of any bandages and skip applying alcohol to my skin too. Studies involving people with diabetes showed no benefit in wiping the skin with alcohol. Those folks know best. Plus, I prefer not to dry out my skin more than it already is. I only use alcohol on the container itself.

LevelCinder55archiveJun 25
↳ replying to @RustBeacon82

That's my habit too. Those coverings exist to halt blood flow after all. Anyone spotting several of them would probably wonder about the cause.

IronLedger45archiveJun 25
↳ replying to @WarmQuill73 (opening post)

I switched to pens that have really fine short needles and my skin reactions dropped a lot. Bandages aren't something I ever reach for because those small needles hardly leave any mark. Keeping the rubber tops on my bottles clean with alcohol pads before each use helps avoid any contamination.

GreyFenwick29archiveJun 25

I didn't anticipate ever requiring a bandage. I merely disinfect the area using an alcohol pad before inserting the needle and then proceed with my activities. The single variation involves cursing due to the burning sensation from the NAD+ shot.

BrightAnchor10archiveJun 25

Never used a band aid

RustBeacon82archiveJun 25
↳ replying to @LevelCinder55

To me any bleeding that makes a bandage seem worth grabbing shows the whole approach was handled wrong.

Wow, this issue drags on without limit. So now I'm piling up bandages as well?
