Stuck at a plateau after six months on GLP and HRT while turning 50

8 replies8 peopleMay 26, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Why am I no longer losing weight on GLP-1 after 23 pounds and how do I restart progress while on HRT?

The group points to possible water retention, incomplete calorie tracking, or a dose that is still low. Several suggest confirming actual intake with strict logging before changing anything else. The original poster later reports a sudden 5-plus pound drop after realizing she had been over-hydrating following a party, confirming temporary fluid retention as the cause.

I'm hitting 50 this year and my top priority is reaching peak fitness. I've been lifting consistently since December after years of training that had slowed down lately. I've been on GLP, working up to 2 mg a week, and started HRT because I'm still premenopausal. Almost six months in and everything has stopped. I've dropped 23 pounds overall but added five this week and seen zero change for the past four. Has anyone else run into this and figured out how to move forward? I really don't want to lose steam. My food choices have stayed tight too.

Hormones can definitely play a role, but after four weeks without movement you need to examine what you're eating. If the scale isn't dropping you're probably not in a deficit. Get strict with logging calories and don't rely on the numbers apps give you. Once you know your real intake, lower it until the weight starts coming off again. Hormones might still be causing water retention, yet calories in versus calories out is almost always the main issue.

Nice work so far. Twenty-three pounds in six months works out to roughly a pound a week, which is solid. Since you're at 2 mg, you could try going higher if side effects are manageable. That amount is often below the effective range for these medications. I agree with the advice to track calories carefully for a bit to confirm your intake is truly controlled. Raising protein might help as well.

Two milligrams is still a low amount, so there's plenty of room to increase.

Which GLP are you using? I'm assuming the one that matches the dose you gave. As others noted, 2 mg is fairly low and going up should produce stronger effects. You could also switch to a different option that suppresses appetite more effectively for some people. Adding a small amount of another compound helped me cut calories even more. HRT itself can sometimes raise hunger, so you might ask your doctor about lowering that dose temporarily.

Good job on what you've already lost. For the stall, start by asking if you're actually logging everything and know your maintenance calories and deficit. Without those numbers you can't tell whether diet needs adjusting or the dose should go up. A five-pound gain in one week isn't necessarily a full stop; weight can swing that much daily from timing, fluids, training, or salt. Four weeks flat is worth checking, though. It could be hormones, extra water from harder workouts, or even eating so little that your body is holding on to everything. Get the logs solid first, then review the data before deciding on medication changes.

Basic suggestion here, like the tech who asks if you've tried restarting. If tracking and dose increases don't fix it, get bloodwork done with your doctor. A coworker on a similar medication had the same stall and it turned out to be kidney-related fluid retention. Sometimes everything else is correct and the body still throws an unexpected issue.

Isn't that frustrating? This age is rough. I'm guessing hormones are involved, and depending on the HRT you're using it might be contributing. I only use the cream and I'm inconsistent with it, which I think triggered my own problems last year. Tirzepatide helped me, and slowly raising the dose by small amounts over weeks could be worth trying. Tracking intake is worth doing just to catch any overlooked calories from oils or dressings. As fitness improves, the same routine burns fewer calories, so a change in activity might be needed. Have you taken measurements besides the scale? The numbers on the scale can stay stuck while body composition still improves.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm going to double the RT dose and tighten up my tracking. I hadn't increased before because things were moving well. I rechecked my measurements and saw I'd dropped another five and a half pounds since yesterday, with BMI and body-fat numbers improving too. Looks like I was holding a lot of water, probably from extra hydration after a family get-together. It's wild how much the scale can shift in a single day.
