Are Protein-Enhanced Chips and Snacks Worth It or Just Marketing
Glad I quit smoking. That said, if I'm heading toward the end anyway, give me two cigarettes. The first one tastes terrible, but the second one ten minutes later is better.
That approach doesn't work. Speaking from experience.
The whole protein push seems driven by worries about muscle loss during weight reduction from those drugs and from aging. From what I've heard, just eating more protein doesn't stop or fix that. Resistance training is the only thing that actually works. These ultra-processed items aren't going to help, and they're harmful in plenty of other ways too. I'm not some food purist or gym enthusiast, just someone in my sixties who dropped a lot of weight, now lifts twice a week, eats whatever I want but smaller portions, tries to limit processed stuff without cutting it out entirely, and keeps workouts effective without overdoing them.
What even are those things? I like pop-tarts as much as the next person but this is going too far.
I get why people want to add a few of these while hitting protein targets. They're not healthy, obviously, and whole foods are better. Moderation is key though. I have a clear protein drink now and then myself. Sometimes it's just tough to hit protein numbers, so if this helps meet goals without much downside it's fine. The real problem is living entirely on ultra-processed stuff. Cool ranch flavor is still the best, but letting people enjoy the occasional treat is okay.
Saw pop-tarts with added protein the other day. Yes I picked some up, but I was planning to buy pop-tarts anyway.
Fair point. If your usual treat has a protein version, is that an improvement? Let us know if the flavor changed. I can see how someone who loves the original might find the protein version doesn't satisfy the same craving.
Couldn't notice much difference in taste. I have protein shakes often so I'm probably used to it. My husband hated the flavor though since he doesn't eat processed protein foods regularly. Not for everyone.
Anyone recall that fat substitute they put in chips years ago? One summer every chip and cookie got reformulated with it, and there were all those warnings about side effects.
