Isopropyl vs ethanol for disinfection

9 replies7 peopleSep 13, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Is ethanol as good as isopropyl alcohol for cleaning injection pen cartridges and vial stoppers?

Users compared isopropyl pads and ethanol swabsticks for reaching recessed rubber stoppers on injector pens. Most found both alcohols effective at 60-70% concentration when allowed to dry, with swabsticks or dipped cotton swabs making the job easier than folded wipes. Official guidance treats the two as interchangeable for this purpose, though one person noted isopropyl may edge out slightly on bactericidal action. Several participants continue the practice mainly for peace of mind even when authorities say it is unnecessary for single-use vials.

I used to wipe the cartridge on my injector pen with a folded isopropyl pad before attaching a new needle. It was awkward and I never felt sure it was clean enough. Then I tried some alcohol swabsticks instead and they reach the recessed rubber stopper much better because you just bend them to release the liquid. They turned out to contain ethanol rather than isopropyl, but online information says the two work equally well. I have only ever seen isopropyl in medical environments and wonder what others think.

Not sure myself. Planning to follow along with how this turns out.

Seems like a worthwhile notion. Grabbed a few for myself recently. Earlier on I would crease cloths to stuff them into the limited room around my pens. Everything should turn out alright unless the alcohol harms the plug.

Sounds good to me, but being broke made me wonder about soaking a cotton swab in alcohol instead. Would that work basically the same way and cost less?

Perhaps your web safeguards surpass mine yet online sources indicated isopropyl works a bit better at eliminating both gram negative and positive organisms including the usual examples than ethanol does. It also disappears a little more gradually or at similar speed based on strength level however each one needs enough moisture duration typically at seventy percent to break down proteins inside the microbes. Slow and steady comes out ahead. I finished my current swabs then moved to soaking plain cotton tips thoroughly using seventy percent isopropyl poured from a container.

I keep cotton swabs and alcohol inside a plastic pouch for tidying up my pens.

This is likely just being overly picky about minor details. Health authorities indicate that sanitizing the containers using disinfectant has no real impact, especially when dealing with disposable ones. Still, it gives me peace of mind to proceed with that step.

I'm the same way about swabbing injection site skin ... some guidelines recommend it, others don't. 1-2¢.

They didn't cost much at all. Each one came sealed on its own and free of germs, which made them handy when going places. What caught me off guard was finding alcohol inside. Has anyone else noticed alcohol being employed to clean things in hospitals or clinics?

Either one works okay here. Health organization recommendations see the two alcohols in that strength range as usable in place of each other on skin or container tops. I clean the spot and wait until it evaporates completely before inserting anything. I skip the toxic kind or the versions with additives. The pads made with the grain alcohol don't seem any worse, just another standard choice.
