Are there any issues transitioning from Semaglutide to Tirzepatide?

7 replies6 peopleJul 28, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

What happens when switching from semaglutide to tirzepatide and how long should you wait between them?

Participants describe the switch as straightforward with no major problems reported. Some moved after only a few days or one week and found comparable or stronger effects once the tirzepatide dose reached 7.5 mg. Others stopped semaglutide after several months due to side effects and started low on tirzepatide, noting greater weight loss afterward.

My partner has taken a low dose of Semaglutide for roughly three months. We'd like to switch her over to Tirzepatide to match what I'm using. Any problems with making that change?

I came across research exploring quicker increases in the newer medication right after moving away from the prior one for adult diabetes. It showed stronger results than the older option for blood sugar management plus weight reduction among those patients. Even so the ideal starting level after changing from that lower amount of the first drug stays uncertain. Other pieces also compare how the pair function and get adjusted in practice.

I'm planning to switch eventually too. How long should I wait—one week, or maybe two to four—before starting the first Tirzepatide injection?

Keep to your usual schedule. When I changed from 1 mg of semaglutide to 5 mg of tirzepatide split twice a week, the results felt similar, which was still not enough. At 7.5 mg I started getting adequate effects.

Sounds like you only paused for a week before moving to Tirzepatide. I'll probably follow that approach, but only after staying on Semaglutide for four weeks without further progress.

For me it was only about three or four days because I was already splitting doses. I've seen suggestions to wait several weeks, but that doesn't make sense to me and no one has explained why.

I stopped semaglutide after four months, including six weeks at 1 mg, because I felt awful. Switched to tirzepatide starting with three weeks at 2.5 then four weeks at 3.75 (I'm being cautious). Not sure if next is 5 mg or higher. I'm losing more weight than I did on semaglutide.
