Bowel Changes on Reta

39 replies30 peopleFeb 18, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Does retatrutide cause fewer or harder bowel movements and how do people handle it?

Users report that Reta reduces appetite and food volume, which naturally leads to smaller and less frequent stools for most. Many add fiber sources such as psyllium husk, magnesium supplements, or similar products to stay regular without full constipation. The effect often improves after the first weeks or with consistent fiber and hydration, though some still notice slower motility even months in.

Anyone running into trouble with number two? I'm okay but the volume is much smaller. My wife is having more trouble though. She normally goes in the morning but now it's been a couple days. We've cut carbs hard except for a couple drinks daily and we're eating less because of the appetite suppression from Reta. Just did the second 4 mg pin last Friday after four 2 mg doses. Weird topic but this feels like the place to ask.

ClearBeacon24archiveFeb 19

Less in, less out.

WarmWillow50archiveFeb 19

As long as you're not actually constipated I agree, less in less out. If it feels like constipation though, a handful of whole roasted pumpkin seeds can get things moving naturally.

AmberCompass48archiveFeb 19

Miralax and metamucil work in two different ways to help you go better.

I started on tirz and switched to reta. Constipation was a real issue until I began taking metamucil and prunes every day. Now it's not a problem.

CopperAlder51archiveFeb 19

In the early weeks handling bathroom troubles I would use a mild tablet several days ahead of my next shot. By injection time both the blockage and the medication effects had faded away. That tablet was milder than stronger options and taking it at night meant it performed the next morning. This is just what happened for me. Those who react strongly to such products might try certain seeds or fiber sources since they helped others as well. At the higher dose these days the trouble looks like it has cleared up.

WryBramble37archiveFeb 19

I got used to adding fiber while on tirzepatide. My usual choice is kashi crunch. Warning, it's strong. I'm much more regular on reta.

PlainAlder11archiveFeb 19

Thanks for the replies. She went this morning and everything is fine. We mix protein powder, oat bran and collagen in a shaker each morning. I agree completely that less in means less out. Mine is way down too. I suggested coffee and a smoke but she just rolled her eyes since we quit years ago. I'll mention metamucil to her. Sorry for the crappy topic.

BlueCinder56archiveFeb 19

A doctor once told me anything from three times a day to once every three days is normal.

GreySparrow64archiveFeb 19

I have found four of those fiber capsules taken each night to be quite effective personally.

BluePebble18archiveFeb 19

Mag07 works for me. My normal was once every six or seven days. Don't judge, I've had intestinal issues my whole life. On tirz it got much worse so this keeps me regular.

QuietTimber26archiveFeb 19

My wife needs mag07. Game changer for us has been keto bread and low-carb tortilla wraps. Two slices give a lot of fiber and protein.

QuietLedger82archiveFeb 19

I noticed a change too when I started reta. We're eating less and food stays around longer. I added psyllium husk three capsules daily and mag07 once or twice a week. Still not on a regular schedule but no constipation problems.

WarmLedger65archiveFeb 19

Magnesium citrate in the evening helps me go in the morning. I've always had slow motility and this tip from a colon hydrotherapist has been a lifesaver.

RustHarbour10archiveFeb 19

I love magnesium citrate. I use it along with prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.

WryPebble33archiveFeb 19

I agree with the same experience. We're mostly all in the same situation. Not full constipation but definitely less often. My eating habits haven't changed much except maybe less snacking.

LevelSignal13archiveFeb 20

Reta definitely made me constipated. Two tablespoons of psyllium husk powder fixed it completely. Start with less if you're new to it. Within three days I felt much more regular.

I've had the same issue. I add benefiber to every protein drink, two or three a day, and it helps a lot. I'd also suggest adding back some complex carbs. There's evidence that reta's GIP signaling and glucagon effects don't work as well without them.

RustFenwick36archiveFeb 20

It's nice to see this topic get mentioned. Daily bathroom visits aren't my trouble but instead I deal with gradual discomfort building from the early morning hours until later on. Those three hours of belly ache before anything happens aren't pleasant. Nothing I've tried makes any difference. The IBS I have contributes to it. It puzzles me how smaller meals still lead to so much waste. Haha.

Not at all for me. Compared to both semaglutide and tirzepatide, reta is much better on my GI system. I had some burping and indigestion but I've been very regular with no issues. Reta is better for regularity than either of the others.

QuietTimber26archiveFeb 20

My GI sides on reta are basically nonexistent. It's a relief after bad ones on high dose tirz.

PlainAlder11archiveFeb 20

This was mainly about my wife, not me. Seems to have helped a few others too. I get heartburn but had it before reta. Just did the seventh pin, third at 4 mg, fifteen minutes ago.

GreyCompass75archiveFeb 20

Miralax in my morning protein shakes is easy to add along with creatine. Also drink a lot more. Fluids become more important with these meds.

WarmLedger65archiveFeb 20
↳ replying to @RustFenwick36

I had that too. It stopped after three or four weeks and now only happens occasionally when I increase the dose. It always settles back down.

RustFenwick36archiveFeb 20
↳ replying to @WarmLedger65

From the beginning months back when I began this has persisted. At present I simply put up with it. Plenty of fluids go into me daily so lack of moisture isn't to blame. Probably my digestive system just isn't fond of me. Someone I know brought up gummies as a possibility. It would be good to know whether others found them helpful.

WarmLedger65archiveFeb 21

That sucks. Hopefully you find something that works.

PatientAlder37archiveFeb 21

My go-to are carb control tortillas. You can put your food in them and they add about twelve grams of fiber each. Two of them and you're ready for the throne.

QuietAnchor73archiveFeb 22

My day doesn't start until after my first coffee and morning constitutional. I had a few bad days when I first started reta. From the advice here I'm using magnesium citrate gummy, one psyllium husk cap in the morning and two at night, chia seeds on cereal, and fluids with electrolytes. Now I'm good.

PlainAlder11archiveFeb 22

My wife is pretty much back to normal, or as normal as she gets. She just notes it's less, like we said earlier.

BrightLantern56archiveFeb 22

This compound often leads to constipation in my experience. Pairing it with fewer carbohydrates meant less fiber since that usually comes along with them. Supplements helped me with that part. It also seems to reduce the urge to drink water, and dehydration brings on the same problem. Higher amounts leave me low on glycogen stores, making heavy lifting or extended cardio sessions tough because I run out of steam quickly. Habits like staying low carb or fasting from the past don't pair well with this. Low carb might not be outright incompatible, but doing it while glycogen is low doesn't feel ideal.

RustQuill44archiveFeb 23

I got the generic orange fiber supplement from the store. One tablespoon a day mixed with water has helped a lot.

RustFenwick36archiveFeb 23

No, thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into it.

BrightMeadow15archiveFeb 23
↳ replying to @GreyCompass75

That's why the psyllium recommendations bother me. Without enough fluids it can plug you up and that happens easily on these meds. Miralax only works gently in the help direction. Once adjusted to the dose maybe switch to natural stuff if wanted. Stool softeners are another option. They pull extra water in without stimulating cramps. Cheap iron in daily vitamins can also cause issues.

RustFenwick36archiveFeb 25

Thanks for the tip. I'll check into it.

IronBramble31archiveFeb 25

I love magnesium glycinate. It's the easiest on the stomach since citrate can be a bit harsh.

BlueCinder33archiveMar 7
↳ replying to @WryBramble37

The flavor of that one is really good. What you said earlier got me giggling.

LevelWillow41archiveMar 7

It's been hard getting used to going from two or three times a day to once or twice every two or three days. It bothers me. For the first five weeks I was overusing miralax by just adding a cap every day. I know I'm not eating three to five thousand calories anymore so less in equals less out but I'm still not okay with the change.

SteadyPebble62archiveMar 7

Ever since I started tirzepatide I've been tearing things up in the bathroom. Definitely need more fiber and water.

IronThistle53archiveMar 7

Psyllium husk my friend. Drink it with water like a large tequila shot. One in the morning and one when I get home from work. It helps remove cholesterol and prevents gallstones if you keep the water up. Can be taken with or without tequila.

When handling the plain fiber powder i stir it into a flavored beverage mix. The green citrus version is my top pick since blending those together produces a flavor like a tart creamy pie. This approach lets the whole thing slide down much more smoothly.
