I recently learned that once opened these vials only last 28 days. Freezing them apparently won't extend the time either. I checked into the smaller 3ml size but was told those aren't appropriate for personal use. How do folks deal with the expense?

I definitely don't follow that rule. I've kept using opened stuff for at least 90 days, sometimes longer. If it stays clear and has been kept right, I keep going with it.

I go three months from the first puncture and mark the date on the bottle. The cost works out to just a few dollars a month anyway.

Just swing by the donation centers on the way to pick up more and that should offset the cost. I've always wondered about the whole expiration idea for this stuff. If you're not doing anything unsanitary and not pushing air back into the vial, what's actually supposed to go wrong after a few weeks or months? I know what the label says, but it doesn't really answer that.

I bought a single printed case for the vial and just use it until empty, which takes three or four months. The case shields the top and blocks light. I keep the whole thing in a cool dark spot like a closet. The case works well.

Where did that 28-day figure come from? The official labeling doesn't mention it. The printed expiration on the bottle is much longer and says nothing about 28 days after opening. I've heard the 28-day rule for reconstituted peptides but not for this.

It's a regulated item so the maker only tested and can only state the conditions they actually studied, like room temperature use for 28 days while it still worked. Anything beyond that wasn't tested so they can't claim it. The same applies to refrigerating it. People with chemistry backgrounds find the whole thing pretty funny.

The 28 days is mainly to get you to buy more. Keep it at room temp or cooler away from light and it should last longer. Even sticking to the short limit it still isn't costly.

I don't get why insulin vials are labeled 90 days, compounded versions are 90 days, yet the water used to make them is sometimes called 28 days. Is the shorter time because we're not in a sterile lab setting? I go 90 days or a bit more in a bag in the fridge as long as nothing looks off. Sometimes I filter into fresh vials. I'd like to see actual testing on a partially used bottle stored for months.

It only gets the tiny bit of air that's already in the needle when you first insert it. If you want to check, try pulling the needle out while the vial is upside down and see how much air actually enters during withdrawal.

I just tested it. Depending on how fast you pull the needle out you get either no bubbles or a couple small ones. Needle size probably plays a role too.

With the finer 31-gauge needles it might be tough. With 30-gauge or bigger I've never emptied one completely but I don't see why it would fail. If vacuum became an issue you could add a little air then. The real concern isn't the small amount of air causing contamination but rather extra oxygen slowly affecting the preservative. The same idea applies even more to peptides since they're more sensitive.

The only time anything goes into my bottle is during reconstitution and those needles are 25-gauge. I might as well stop adding air ahead of time and tell others the same. No point introducing it until you actually need to.

I've moved to spikes on these long-lasting vials. Repeated punctures through the seal raise the odds of coring, which I'd rather avoid. Jabbing the everyday container over and over before it's gone doesn't appeal to me either.

This thing looks like it's built for one container only and can block germs for around a week if you wipe the port properly with alcohol each time before going in. It isn't made for a whole month. Leave the spike sitting on that same container and toss both after seven days or when the container gets thrown out or per your site's rules whichever hits first. It lets you draw doses again and again without any needle so that cuts down on risk. Certain models include a filter that keeps pressure even to avoid a vacuum and make pulling liquid simpler. It keeps contaminants out when you handle it right. The fit works across several different top diameters on those containers. Normally you replace it together with the container or after seven days following whatever your workplace says.

The results puzzle me. Why would those room temperature samples both without and with air seem to strengthen at first only to weaken later? Maybe this shows bac maturing like wine does up to a certain stage.

I don't feel like running the numbers myself, yet I bet adding error bars to that plot would turn the whole thing into random fluctuation. No one's actually claiming extra preservative just appears by itself inside the containers.
