Fat tissue buildup at injection site?

4 replies5 peopleJun 9, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Has anyone had fat buildup or lipohypertrophy at repeated injection sites, and did it go away after resting the area?

Users report noticing thicker spots or lumps at frequent injection locations, often linked to insufficient site rotation. Some saw improvement after avoiding the area for a month or switching to shorter thinner needles, while one case involved swelling that hardened then resolved after drainage but left a scar. Effects on medication absorption were not observed in the reported experiences. Advice centered on rotating sites more widely and avoiding areas too close to the navel.

Hey everyone, I've spotted that my usual injection spot, even though I switch around, feels thicker now. Seems like extra fat buildup there, possibly lipohypertrophy which could mess with how the stuff absorbs, so probably skip it for a bit. Wondering if others have dealt with this, how it progressed, whether it cleared up after avoiding the spot, and if it changed the med's effectiveness. Mine began right at my first shot location, a few cm right of the belly button.

As a type 2 diabetic getting four daily injections, scar tissue builds if sites aren't varied. Rest the spot for about a month and it returns to normal.

Mostly encountered firm lumps rather than soft fat. Switching to finer shorter needles like 32 gauge 4mm resolved it. Avoid injecting nearer than 5 cm to the navel. Now use outer abdomen areas like love handles. Stopped thigh injections because bruising is hard to prevent due to low fat.

Perhaps skip the stomach area and use the thigh or buttocks for injections instead.

Had the identical issue two months back but on the opposite side. Noticed swelling right after the shot. It persisted a month, hardened and resembled a pimple. Resolved by expressing the fat, now not firm anymore though a small scar remains. Didn't impact the medication's action.
