I'm planning to purchase bacteriostatic water since locating the usual type has become difficult lately. I'll check its acidity level using test strips. What range works best when mixing reta? Should I pull a sample from the container with a needle and apply it to the strip? What amount avoids using more than needed?

I prefer creating bacteriostatic water on my own. Issues arise with alternative products from unofficial sources since each container might differ in purity and acidity, causing unnecessary expense. Mixing injection-grade water with benzyl alcohol in a one percent ratio works well for me as it stays within acceptable limits and requires minimal effort to prepare.

The measurement came back as 5.7 and that seems perfect to me. From what I saw the okay values fall between 4.5 and 7.

I followed the same approach. I purchased a liter of sterile water for injections along with half a liter of benzyl alcohol. Then I mixed nine milliliters of the alcohol into the water. The resulting pH measured 6.3 with my refractometer. I worked under a laminar flow hood after cleaning the space using seventy percent isopropyl alcohol. I've cultivated mushrooms in the past and keep all the necessary tools here at home.

Glad you mentioned how it went for you. Mixing a milliliter of benzyl alcohol into a liter of sterile water brought the acidity down to 6.2, matching exactly what was expected. Right now I'm making use of the workplace laboratory, though I'm thinking about getting a small flow hood to set up at home. Which flow hood are you working with? I've seen some cheaper desktop versions and I'm wondering how dependable they turn out to be.

Seems good. If you get the glass bottles with butyl stoppers you basically have the same stuff as the other common options.

It might seem odd but I built my own laminar airflow hood from scratch. Mushroom cultivation was just a hobby for me so a commercial unit wasn't necessary. I looked into the principles behind it and picked up the method from another grower. I got the parts at a regular shop in the section for air purifiers and ionizers. The list included a HEPA filter a carbon filter a lidded plastic container a twelve volt fan a matching power supply with speed control and a particle counter. I cut openings in the container one for the stacked filters and another for the fan which has to sit separately or the airflow won't stay laminar. The counter I used picks up particles down to two point five microns. I set everything up on a wiped glass surface in a still room with no pets or foot traffic nearby. Positioning the counter about fifteen to twenty centimeters ahead of the filter I ran the fan on high for several minutes until readings dropped to zero with only the occasional single particle afterward. Checking multiple spots in front showed uneven results at first so I gradually lowered the fan speed until the readings stayed consistent everywhere. Once that happened the hood was ready and I could work within roughly thirty centimeters of the filter face. I sourced only the power supply online and the whole build came in under a hundred euros yet it performed exactly as needed. I always moved quickly during any procedure to limit exposure risks. A commercial hood could be used instead to set up an entire cleanroom if desired and someone I know did exactly that for professional culture work and sales.

Yeah, it's pretty good. Reminds me of that enclosed workspace from earlier. Though having my arms stuck inside all the time feels too restrictive and cuts down on how freely I can shift around. Lifting the front panel works fine, except afterward it no longer qualifies as a proper airflow cabinet since the downward stream bounces back up and mixes with outside air. Built the thing just to test myself and shared the result hoping somebody might like the concept. I'll keep things focused here. Great!
