Started Reta at the wrong dose!

Summary

what happens if you accidentally start retatrutide at 2.5 mg instead of a much lower planned first dose

Most participants say the 2.5 mg dose is close to the 2 mg amount used in trials, so serious problems are unlikely though some side effects like nausea, reflux, or reduced appetite can appear. The person who gave the dose reported her husband felt bloated, nauseous, and had heart-rate sensations that lasted a couple of days. Several users advise waiting about a week before the next injection and then moving to a lower amount such as 1 mg. Others note that starting far below 2 mg simply delays the same adjustment period.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

whether beginning at 0.25 mg twice weekly is sensible or simply postpones the inevitable adjustment period

Still open

how severe the husband's symptoms ultimately became and whether he continued treatment

Nothing here is advice.

We finally gave the first shot today with my husband trying it. I ended up giving him 2.5 mg instead of the 0.25 mg I meant to use. Is there anything we should do to lessen the impact? My plan had been 0.25 twice a week, so how do I adjust the schedule now? Should I hold off three weeks because of the half-life before the next 0.25 mg to get back on the original plan? We were going to raise the amount every four weeks if needed, preferring slow steady progress and fewer side effects.

He is definitely going to notice it. He might not feel like eating for a week. I would probably hold off about a week before the next injection. Let us know how bad the side effects turn out to be.

WarmQuill25archiveMay 9

It is not a huge issue. The studies begin at 2 mg, so this should be okay.

Yeah he should be fine. I agree that 2 mg and higher can feel strong for someone new to it, but it will pass. At worst he might have some stomach upset while his body gets used to it. Wait seven days then drop back down to 1 mg or even lower. I began at 600 mcg, moved to 800 mcg, then 1 mg every five days and settled at 1.2 mg every five days as my comfortable level. I may go up later if food noise returns. The food noise disappeared and I lost interest in alcohol, weed, cookies, and chips. Last night I had a cheeseburger but could not finish the fries.

Base the next step on why you are using it. If the main goal is big weight loss then the dose is probably fine. If the goal is maintenance then wait it out and stay at the lowest effective amount for long-term use.

I began at 2 mg myself. He will probably be okay.

PlainAlder11archiveMay 10

I also started at 2 mg, which is what the company uses in studies. I am now at 8 mg.

CopperPebble12archiveMay 10

This mistake happens often and he should be fine since 2 mg is the usual trial starting amount. Just watch him for a few days and then continue slowly once he stabilizes.

PatientFenwick91archiveMay 10

You can use an online tool to see when levels will be low enough to dose again. Levels should reach about 1 mg around the 18th, so a 1 mg shot then might work. Or wait until the 30th when they are near 0.25 mg. I started at 1 mg and am now at 5 mg.

BlueQuill24archiveMay 10

If it is too strong he might get nausea, diarrhea, or constipation that clears up in a couple of days. The real risk is that he becomes unwilling to keep going because of those short-term effects. Move slowly and stay symptom-free.

I wonder how it affected him. Hopefully the original poster updates us.

This is not semaglutide that starts at 0.25 mg. Retatrutide starts at 2 mg.

Same here, I feel bad for him and hope she posts an update.

It is basically a non-issue. He received 2.5 mg instead of the usual 2 mg starting amount. Reactions differ, but the chance that an extra 25 percent creates a big difference in symptoms seems low. It is still far above 0.5 mg per week, but nothing like the woman who started at 7.5 mg of the other compound.

CopperSignal27archiveMay 11

The amount given was not wrong; the planned 0.25 mg was the wrong starting point. 2.5 mg is near the standard 2 mg trial start. Side effects are possible either way, but beginning that low only delays them and may make them hit more suddenly later. Doses one-eighth of the usual amount mostly waste product. If extra caution is wanted then 1 mg could be reasonable, but not 0.25 mg. Being off by a factor of ten is common, so always double-check calculations and use a peptide calculator for dilutions.

All right, bend over and take ten times the dose you expected.

I would not deliberately take one-eighth the usual starting dose.

I do not know. I had problems at 2 mg. If I had started at 2.5 mg instead of 0.5 mg I have no idea how bad it would have been. I still want to hear what happened because I really need to know.

PlainAlder11archiveMay 11

What is the big issue? He received half a milligram more than the usual starting dose. I do not know where the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg starting ideas come from. When I researched for months I only saw 2 mg mentioned. I read a lot but never on Reddit.

PlainMarble21archiveMay 11

Update: he felt mostly okay on Saturday but had bad acid reflux Sunday morning. He felt very full and bloated all day and could not eat much. This morning he is nauseous and overnight he felt like he was having a panic attack, maybe from a faster heart rate. He is also hot and cold. The effects are not terrible but he is not happy. Meanwhile my son and I took 0.25 mg (actually closer to 0.3 mg because it is easier to measure) and we just felt full faster with nothing else. I read for two or three months, including on Reddit, and it seemed starting very low and splitting doses might reduce side effects. We are not aiming for fast loss, no more than two pounds a week.
