Tirzepatide vs semaglutide vs retatrutide: starting choice, sides, and escalation

82 replies37 peopleJul 2, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Which of these compounds offers the best starting profile for appetite suppression and weight loss, and when should users escalate or avoid others?

The thread establishes tirzepatide as the dominant recommendation for first-time users because it delivers stronger appetite control and weight loss than semaglutide while producing milder side effects when doses are split; it is viewed as more reliable than retatrutide due to greater accumulated user feedback. Participants note that retatrutide can be considered later for higher loss targets but brings added risks around heart rate and reflux that require careful titration. Semaglutide is frequently advised against outright because of its unfavorable side-to-benefit ratio, though some discuss stacking it onto retatrutide or switching without breaks. Personal tolerance and goals remain the deciding factors.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether to begin with tirzepatide or move directly to retatrutide, and whether semaglutide has any useful role in regimens.

Hey all, really appreciate the input from my first post as it helped a lot. Still weighing semaglutide against tirzepatide for my fat loss stall even with steady workouts and eating. Both look solid from what I've seen but their effects differ a bit, so I'm curious what tipped the scale for those who've used one or both. Did the choice work out as hoped?

Retatrutide has come up a few times but I'm still getting a handle on it. Focusing on the more established choices right now because there's more user feedback out there. Thanks for the idea anyway.

Totally get that. Haven't started retatrutide myself yet though I have some ready for when the time comes. Plenty of folks around can share on it. I've been on tirzepatide since November last year.

IronMarble78archiveJul 2

I'd suggest tirzepatide. Eleven months in and down 80 pounds with diet, lifting, and daily steps. Now testing retatrutide but the hunger control feels weaker or maybe calories are burning faster so appetite is up, hard to say.

SteadySignal69archiveJul 2

Tirzepatide, the trial numbers look clearly stronger than semaglutide and with milder side effects.

GreenMeadow54archiveJul 2

Can't see any real edge for semaglutide over tirzepatide except maybe cost. Tirzepatide simply outperforms on results and especially on fewer sides. It's gotten affordable enough that price isn't a big factor anymore. Go tirzepatide.

PatientAnchor52archiveJul 2

Same here, tirzepatide seems to cut inflammation the most compared to the other GLP options.

AmberCinder46archiveJul 2

Tirzepatide gets my vote too. Better across the board.

PatientPebble33archiveJul 2

Start on semaglutide and move to tirzepatide only if progress stalls.

IronLedger65archiveJul 2

Began with semaglutide up to the top dose the compounder suggested, then switched to tirzepatide starting at 9 mg. Weight loss picked up again and sides were milder overall. Semaglutide brought low-grade nausea while tirzepatide brought constipation that prunes fixed after a couple weeks. Still on tirzepatide and recently tried dosing every five days instead of seven to break a stall, results pending. Tirzepatide worked better for me with fewer issues though bodies vary.

WarmCompass44archiveJul 2

The real choice is tirzepatide or retatrutide.

PatientPebble33archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @WarmCompass44

Not always, since retatrutide gave me a bad reaction while semaglutide is working fine.

SteadySignal41archiveJul 2

Plenty of people criticize semaglutide but it worked for me and I think all the GLP-1s deserve consideration. Switched from a maintenance dose of semaglutide to tirzepatide a few months back and now use tirzepatide for maintenance. Appetite control feels stronger on semaglutide and I miss it. Sides might be higher on semaglutide but it's really about handling them with whatever you pick. Good luck on the journey, it's been great for me.

SteadySparrow75archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @SteadySignal41

They're all just options to have on hand. I've got a couple kits of semaglutide but doubt I'll need them. Tirzepatide is working well now. If I add anything else it would probably be stacking retatrutide with tirzepatide to test it.

LevelAlder29archiveJul 2

Only used tirzepatide so far and it's been great. Five months in and down 30 pounds without changing activity. Diet improved on its own from shifts in taste and cravings with almost no extra effort. Food noise disappeared completely. Tirzepatide plus eloralintide looks promising in studies so that could be a solid future stack.

SteadySignal41archiveJul 2

Same here, nice to have the options ready if needed.

SteadySparrow75archiveJul 2

The tirzepatide and eloralintide pair does sound like it could be very strong. Current stash is mostly tirzepatide plus a big supply of retatrutide and a couple kits each of semaglutide and cagrilintide. At my age the stash might outlast me so unless eloralintide gets cheap I probably won't add it soon. Everything I have should cover what I need going forward, especially with the ability to switch things around.

CopperLedger37archiveJul 2

Both the studies and user reports show tirzepatide delivers stronger results. On side effects the trials aren't decisive but users usually say tirzepatide has fewer.

ClearAnchor21archiveJul 2

Tirzepatide every time. Tried both and tirzepatide was clearly better. Semaglutide just left me feeling sick without any weight loss. Your results may differ.

IronLedger65archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @SteadySparrow75

My stash will probably outlast me too. Planning to leave it to a relative in the will. They're wary of gray market stuff but maybe by then they'll see it didn't harm me and give some a try. Hopefully by that point there will be once-yearly pellets or similar options.

SteadySparrow75archiveJul 2

Bequeathing in a will and hoping they see it didn't kill you are two phrases I don't usually see together in one post.

BlueBramble29archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @SharpAnchor34 (opening post)

I'd pick tirzepatide. Down 70 pounds since starting. Food noise stays low and the pounds keep coming off steadily.

LevelThistle44archiveJul 2

The real question is why anyone in mid-2026 would still choose semaglutide over tirzepatide. I'm on retatrutide and semaglutide mostly out of curiosity since I've already done tirzepatide. Started at 0.25 mg but felt it was too much so dropped to 0.125 mg twice a week along with 9 mg twice weekly of retatrutide.

NorthWillow72archiveJul 2

Another vote for tirzepatide. Reasons include stronger overall trial results, longer-term availability, and combo testing with other compounds. Most importantly it worked for me.

LevelTimber64archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @CopperBeacon24

Now the person has two threads to decide between two products and you throw in a third.

RustKettle57archiveJul 2

Go with retatrutide. If that's not an option then tirzepatide is the clear choice over semaglutide.

QuietThistle70archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @LevelThistle44

That's why I keep a 5 mg kit of semaglutide around as a possible stack with retatrutide. Probably won't ever open it but it should last forever and it's cheap now. Wouldn't take much if I ever add it to ongoing retatrutide. For the original poster you'd be unusual to get worse sides or weaker results from tirzepatide. Without personal experience pointing elsewhere, tirzepatide is the straightforward pick. With any GLP be careful on the starting ramp up and don't rush it.

ClearBramble68archiveJul 2

If you polled people who've used all three the advice would likely be to start fresh on the gray market with retatrutide. My own path started with semaglutide up to the then-max 2.4 mg with almost no weight loss and bad GI issues including intense gastric pain. Switched to tirzepatide but needed higher doses to get going because of the prior semaglutide use. Only saw loss once I reached 10 mg and now at 15 mg. Anecdotally many on tirzepatide who move to retatrutide notice weaker appetite suppression than before, yet trials still show retatrutide gives better weight loss overall. Starting straight on retatrutide means you wouldn't have that comparison to make.

LevelThistle44archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @ClearBramble68

Suggesting retatrutide to someone aiming for around 15 percent loss seems off target. I moved from tirzepatide to retatrutide after four weeks because my goal was 30 to 35 percent and retatrutide fit better.

NorthWillow72archiveJul 2
↳ replying to @LevelThistle44

From what I've seen the view is that retatrutide is a personal decision with several factors. Long-time users in this area often think it shouldn't be the first choice and there are reasons for that. For me I planned to consider retatrutide only if weekly loss targets weren't met. There's also a benefit to not dropping weight too fast. I reached goal in seven months with 64 pounds total lost at about 1.5 pounds per week which matched what I wanted.

PlainCompass54archiveJul 3
↳ replying to @IronLedger65

That matches how it went for me as well. Calm magnesium helps a lot with the constipation too.

KeenKettle95archiveJul 3

Honestly go with retatrutide. Dropped from 229 to 180 pounds in three months on it. Sides were rough at first but eased a lot later. If you're set against retatrutide then tirzepatide beats semaglutide.

WrySignal53archiveJul 3

Used all three and retatrutide is the one I'll stick with going forward.

SharpAnchor34archiveJul 3

Tirzepatide looks like the one most people are actually running at the moment.

SharpAnchor34archiveJul 3

Thanks for the experience, it does seem tirzepatide is still the most reliable one people report success with.

My wife dropped nearly 100 pounds from 215 to 115 on tirzepatide. She's now on retatrutide for maintenance while focusing on muscle. I've been using retatrutide mainly for recomp since I don't have much to lose. It raised my resting heart rate by 10 bpm so that's worth watching with retatrutide. My daughter began on semaglutide up to 1 mg and felt awful every week after the shot. She lost weight but a lot came from vomiting three days a week. It was the only option at the time because she was 17. We switched her to tirzepatide and she's doing better while still losing. In short tirzepatide first, retatrutide second, semaglutide way last.

This item shows up often due to its presence in both established pharmaceutical channels and informal ones. Familiarity with the adverse reactions and related aspects exists. Incidentally, utilizing the quote feature across multiple entries permits addressing them together within a unified response rather than separately each time.
