Anyone else having problem sleeping on GLP-1s?

35 replies20 peopleOct 10, 2025☆ Follow
Summary

Do GLP-1 drugs like tirzepatide and retatrutide disrupt sleep and what helps?

Many users report worse sleep after starting these medications, with frequent awakenings after 1-2 hours, lighter sleep, and reduced total hours that often coincides with higher resting heart rate. Some find relief by splitting doses, using low-dose quetiapine or guanfacine, exogenous ketones before bed, or switching injection timing, while others see no change or improvement. Calorie deficit itself and metabolic shifts are cited as contributing factors. Experiences vary widely by compound and dose.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Some participants experience no worsening or even improved sleep on tirzepatide or retatrutide, while others see clear deterioration tied to dose increases or weight loss milestones.

Still open

Whether the sleep issues reliably improve after the first few weeks at a new dose or over longer periods, and whether ketones or CGM-guided adjustments work consistently for most people.

Nothing here is advice.

I've been using Tirza for a few months and am moving over to Reta gradually. Since I began this whole process my nighttime rest has fallen apart completely. I wake at least four or five times and end up with only two or three hours total. It's really annoying because even the sleep meds I'm prescribed do nothing. Wondering if others run into the same trouble with these meds and what they do about it.

NorthKettle51archiveOct 10, 2025

Having a lousy sleep pattern before Tirz means the lousy pattern afterward doesn't stand out. I just go through life constantly worn out.

SharpHarbour48archiveOct 10, 2025

Yep, these days my rest feels way worse than before. Nothing I've done has made things any better.

CopperCompass90archiveOct 10, 2025

Have you thought about how slower stomach processing might shift when that nighttime pill takes effect? The delay could make it active right when you're hoping to feel alert, which leaves you wiped out. Just wondering.

WarmQuill32archiveOct 10, 2025

This medication disrupts my rest more severely than the previous one. The effect peaks on the evening following the shot. Dividing the seven-day amount into a pair of reduced shots made a big difference. I also received a prescription for guanfacine ER at 2 mg, which lessens the tense sensation and elevated pulse by lowering nervous system overactivity. It has aided my concentration and also my blood pressure. Regarding rest, the physician gave me a minimal amount of quetiapine, specifically between 12.5 and 25 milligrams. In such small quantities, it functions primarily to block histamine and promote drowsiness rather than treating psychosis. This addresses both my insomnia and the hypersensitivity in my skin. It's effective.

I totally agree. My rest stayed normal until I dropped a specific quantity of pounds, and I regret not recording the exact figure. Then all at once I began rousing between sixty and one hundred twenty minutes following the moment I dozed off. It was always exactly one hour, an hour and a half, or two hours, with no other intervals. This issue has persisted for more than twelve months. Sure, consulting a physician makes sense. Yet once I examined several clips on the topic, I opted to consume supplemental ketones immediately prior to sleeping. The initial attempt occurred yesterday evening. I remained asleep the entire time. Still, a single evening might prove random, and occasionally I have managed uninterrupted rest before, therefore continued experimentation seems necessary. I'll provide further updates.

This matches what I'm going through perfectly. I manage to drift off initially, yet I end up awake again after less than a couple hours. That occurs regardless of using the doctor-ordered pills for rest.

BlueWillow27archiveOct 11, 2025

Over the coming evenings I'll experiment with ketones once more to check whether they make a difference. Should that turn out to be the case, I'll be sure to mention it here.

QuietCompass69archiveOct 11, 2025

Sleep has long been somewhat unsettled for me because I end up stirring at least once each night and the rest feels shallower afterward especially when that happens after about four and a half or five hours. Even so I managed seven and a half to eight hours total in bed including roughly an hour awake while still showing solid deep and rem stages along with a resting pulse near sixty to sixty five. The prior substance never shifted any of that even after reaching five milligrams across two and a half months. Once I moved to the replacement starting at two point five milligrams and then three point three three the pattern stayed unchanged with one or two awakenings. Once the replacement hit five milligrams though my resting pulse moved up near seventy five sleep grew much lighter and I now stir three or four times plus it takes longer to drift off so actual sleep hours dropped from six and a half or seven down to five or five and a half. That leaves me worn out yet a preworkout session plus coffee lets me push past it temporarily and my intake has risen to three hundred milligrams compared with one hundred fifty before. I still catch short naps in the afternoon or evening even while working at a desk. From what I have seen elsewhere this sometimes lasts the first two or three weeks after raising the amount so I intend to push through another couple of weeks before judging whether it remains worthwhile. Eight kilograms have come off already with only four left until ten percent body fat. Should the rest fail to reach at least six and a half hours with resting pulse under seventy I could lower the current dose back to two point five and pair it with two point five of an alternative or switch over to five through seven point five of that other option instead.

After my second evening with the ketones I stayed asleep the whole time.

Which ones did you drink? Looking at places they come in large quantities and I don’t want to spend a lot just to try them out.

BlueWillow27archiveOct 11, 2025

My very first experience with this involved getting a lone two-ounce container at a supplement shop. The taste leaves something to be desired. Peach turned out to be the most tolerable variety for me. These have a slight saltiness. I generally chase them with some water afterward. Because my aim was to aid sleep I steered clear of the caffeinated option.

Fatigue never showed up for me from the first one. Now I get by with only five and a half to six hours of rest, down from seven or eight before starting. The second one makes resting easier, but since I take it over six-month periods, stopping it will have me monitoring my rest closely.

Calling the flavor less than enjoyable sells it short. These have a taste like liquids that basic instincts warn you to avoid swallowing. Haha.

Fucking hell you were spot on. The raspberry lemonade kind was the only caffeine free option I could grab nearby so I bought that and it reminds me of cough syrup.

SharpHarbour48archiveOct 13, 2025

My initial evening proved disappointing. I headed to bed around ten o'clock but stirred awake between half past twelve and one, remaining restless until roughly three before finally dozing off again and rising near six thirty.

I've never sampled glass cleaner myself, yet the flavor here matches almost exactly what I picture that would be like.

BlueWillow27archiveOct 13, 2025

Sorry to hear you went through that unpleasant experience without any benefit. Dealing with these nighttime awakenings for nearly twelve months has given me some idea of what you're going through. Various approaches like breathing devices, certain medications along with overeating upon waking, over-the-counter remedies, taping my mouth, relaxation techniques, avoiding electronics, special eyewear for screens, and dietary additions such as amino acids didn't help me. Suspecting a connection to how my body processes energy, I experimented with ketone supplements and it paid off. I'd like to encourage persistence since that's probably your plan, yet I recall how frustrating such suggestions felt amid exhaustion.

Experimented with multiple compounds whose names I barely recall anymore. A couple of sleep remedies handle the issue decently yet leave me miserable the next morning. Really unsure how to move forward at this point. Feeling completely wiped out.

BlueWillow27archiveOct 13, 2025

I checked with my doctor before using a continuous glucose monitor to track whether nighttime low blood sugar alerts were pulling me out of sleep. That possibility led me to take ketones right before lying down so my system could move from relying on glucose over to burning fat while I rested. I also watched how soon before bed I ate because it influences glucose readings and sometimes triggers heartburn that jars me awake. I experimented with morning sunlight exposure thinking a circadian mismatch might be involved but it changed nothing for me. I tried DSIP too and while it produced stronger dreams it still left me waking in the middle of the night. On its own I paid attention to physical sensations at those moments and later connected them to the sunburn like feeling some people report with reta which I had noticed in spots on myself making it tougher to drift off again.

ClearWillow59archiveOct 13, 2025

Those two help me rest deeply through the night. The other day I dozed off for four hours in the afternoon, turned in around ten, and got up the next morning at seven. Still I spent an hour doing a tough lifting session that left me totally drained. My habit is to give myself the shot right after waking as one of the first things. Some others mention doing theirs later in the day but that would stop me from getting any sleep.

PatientPebble27archiveOct 13, 2025

Apart from accounts others posted about various glps and their influence on slumber, the state of eating fewer calories while dropping pounds steadily disrupts rest on its own. Each time I switch from keeping weight steady or gaining to cutting back, rest becomes disturbed within a few days and remains that way through the entire fat loss phase.

GreyWillow80archiveOct 13, 2025

Fortunately I avoided any tiredness from the initial medications, yet after beginning this latest one three weeks back my rest has become unsettled with me stirring before dawn. I manage to drift off again shortly. I used to boast that I slept extremely soundly. However I steer clear of caffeine completely since there aren't many like me and even tiny doses disrupt my slumber.

AmberKettle80archiveOct 14, 2025

Back when I began using the initial substance my nighttime rest topped out at just two or four hours. I would stir awake partway through needing the bathroom and then lie there unable to resume sleeping. Once I added the pair of recovery compounds that situation turned around completely. These days I clock in a straightforward six hours without any interruptions during the dark hours.

BrightWillow90archiveOct 14, 2025

Insomnia troubled me during the initial months following the start of this treatment. Taking melatonin provided relief. Additionally, my pulse increased by around ten beats per minute, accompanied by severe panic episodes that nearly led me to stop. Gradually everything settled down, and after fourteen months the sole persistent issues involve digestion.

It never crossed my mind that these two substances were messing with my rest. Looking back though, my nights turned noticeably rougher once I began the first one, and then declined even more once I layered in the second. After mulling it over, I believe I've spotted what triggered it.

SharpHarbour48archiveOct 18, 2025

Lying in bed at half past two, I can't help but think this survi might be disrupting my rest. Participants in the research describe matching complaints. Will these issues gradually lessen? Alternatively, tracking my glucose with a monitor over several days could reveal if sugar levels play a role. Around 2024 I noticed discussions of individuals using such devices, recalling one that stood out for low cost and accessibility, yet the details escape me now. What a pain.

Seems like you might be thinking of that product. Searching the internet for it could help. From what I remember the monthly rate was similar if bought right from them.

SlowTimber64archiveOct 18, 2025

So far my rest at night stays the same with this medication, even though I've only been using it a short while. I did shift from liking to lie on my side to feeling more refreshed when I sleep face down. It might have nothing to do with the change.

NorthSparrow11archiveOct 18, 2025

Since starting this medication my body has felt different overall. Adding zinc and magnesium to what my physician prescribed for hydroxyzine hydrochloride brought noticeable relief in my situation.

SlowSparrow96archiveOct 18, 2025

My sleep was already shaky before I began this medication, and things have only declined further since then. I used to do the injections in the evening after hearing others mention it as a way to rest through any early reactions. That only worked for the first couple of times, since I still couldn't drift off even with the tea and supplements I normally rely on, which used to do the job fine. Moving the shots to daytime has eased things slightly, though I'm nowhere near where I was beforehand. I'm looking into another substance that might help with rest, but I want to check into it more because the feedback out there is all over the place.

QuietLedger67archiveOct 19, 2025

Once I began this medication I needed larger amounts of my nighttime pills. The hour chosen for my shot makes no difference at all.
