I have quite a few peptides frozen in several plastic containers and now it's hard to get just one vial out. Is it fine to let the whole thing thaw so I can grab the vial and then freeze it again? Any ideas for storing them going forward so pulling one is simpler.

The usual advice is to avoid freeze-thaw cycles, which is why people warn against freezers with automatic defrost. Still, I haven't come across any actual data showing harm. How did yours end up frozen in place like that? It seems unusual. My only real problem is my wife stuffing other things into the same space.

I keep dozens of them in the freezer too. Normally I pull one vial, let it thaw, mix it up and use it. Next time I need another. It's a bit like food: if you keep freezing and thawing the same item it gets freezer burned and loses quality.

I figure the plastic container shrank more than the glass vials inside it. That's my best guess. I don't see any moisture.

It's not just casual advice, there is actual lab work on peptides. Search for terms like transition glass temperature. Even the summaries can be dry, but studies look at how excipients affect whether peptides clump during freezing.

Thanks. I never dug into it because I didn't need to with the garage freezer. I was curious though, especially after those tests showing peptides in powder form last longer at room temperature than most of us expected.

For dry lyophilized material there is little or no free water, so the usual freeze-thaw damage mechanisms are much weaker. That said, not every peptide behaves the same. Some delicate ones can still degrade slowly even when dried. For most common research peptides, keeping the powder in the freezer is the normal recommendation.

I don't get why moving them out of the containers they arrive in is better than some of these other cases. That plastic one looks like just a bigger version of the original packaging.

I put my plastic containers with the peptides inside a freezer bag and squeeze out as much air as I can. I think I'm going to switch to a softer container instead.

The plastic shrinks more than the glass vials and traps them, so it's tough to get them out. I'm worried I'll break one. I already broke a thin-walled vial early on.

I got that part. But why move them out of the plastic cases they originally come in and into another plastic case? I haven't run into these problems with the original packaging.

What about wrapping a hot rag around the bottom of the one you want so it warms just enough to loosen it? That should free it quickly.

I don't like to thaw and then freeze peptides again and again because that tends to hurt their stability. In terms of keeping them stored for later, I prefer boxes that have separate compartments or include foam pieces since this stops the vials from clumping up and lets me grab them without much trouble.

I use the insulated bottles with the inserts and just bought the large stainless vacuum lunch box that holds 132 or 144 vials. I've noticed some frost inside and on the vials and looked into it: at least for me, don't take the boxes out of the freezer to open them. That lets room-temperature air in before you put it back, causing condensation. Open it while it's still in the freezer and avoid warm air if you can.

I'd prefer silicone inserts I can trim to fit the insulated flasks I already own, since those keep things colder longer. It looks available on the Australian site. Here's the direct version too.

Mine hasn't arrived yet so I haven't chosen. I'll probably repurpose the small ones. Some listings show the large container using these inserts, or you could print your own.
