SS-31 - Scientific Review - Snake Oil or Energy Elixir?

23 replies17 peopleMay 6, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Does SS-31 repair mitochondria and deliver lasting energy benefits, or is it mostly hype based on limited human data?

Users report mixed personal results with SS-31, ranging from gradual reductions in daily fatigue to no noticeable change when used alone or alongside GLP-1 drugs and other peptides. Several note it may work better as part of a stack with MOTS-c or NAD+, particularly for those over 40 or with prior fatigue issues, but strong placebo concerns and high cost make outcomes hard to isolate. Human trials show only weak or non-significant effects outside specific genetic conditions, leaving most evidence anecdotal.

I'm curious if this substance actually restores mitochondrial function enough to increase energy over time. I dug into the published research myself to figure out whether it made sense for me to keep paying for it.

Lots of talk online focuses on short term changes like higher energy molecule output, improved blood sugar handling, cell signaling shifts, or chromosome end maintenance. Those things check out in the data. Still, do they stick around long enough to matter, or just fade away quickly?

I pulled together findings from a big database of papers and double checked the summaries with a couple of AI tools.

One trial looked at older adults with clear muscle energy problems. A single two hour infusion produced a small temporary rise in energy production that mostly disappeared within a week, and the main fatigue measure showed nothing reliable.

Another examined people with inherited muscle weakness. Higher amounts led to better walking distance and easier breathing after five days, but nothing was tracked past the first week.

A heart attack protection study found no real reduction in tissue damage or other heart measures after the infusion during artery reopening.

A four week daily injection trial in the same muscle weakness group showed a modest walking gain that missed statistical importance, though some tiredness ratings improved.

A longer test in boys with a rare genetic condition found no advantage over placebo during the blinded part, while the later open phase had gains that could stem from many other causes.

Two heart failure trials using daily shots for a month produced only tiny shifts in pumping strength that did not stand out from placebo.

The biggest phase three trial with over two hundred participants across multiple countries showed the compound failed to beat placebo on walking or fatigue scores after six months.

An open extension from an earlier study gave mixed signals on distance and tiredness, but lacked controls and stopped early.

Overall the pattern looks pretty ordinary to me. Even reading the brighter spots generously, the amounts used daily would add up to a huge expense. Most protocols centered on forty milligrams each day. What are your thoughts?

Sometimes the most you can expect is them combining effects with similar compounds. I like to joke that you need to use the whole set before any one does anything. With this one in particular, perhaps it prepares the body for healing down the line. One research trial on a related item also went with quite a large amount each day. That amount seems unrealistic to me because of the reactions at the injection spots. A few folks mention feeling more energetic or getting past a plateau in losing weight even when using smaller amounts of it, which is why the personal stories encourage continued purchases of these things.

Having finished my initial batch of ss-31 at that strength mixed with nad, each dose left me drained right afterward. Only later did I notice my energy stayed steadier across daytime hours. A fresh batch has arrived for pairing with motsc along with the nad still on hand. Shifts show up modestly rather than dramatically. In my forties after menopause set in years earlier, even modest gains feel useful as I stick with daily efforts and add peptides logically. I would rate the whole thing highly. Younger people who lack any addiction background or severe prior stress and who still have strong natural hormone function could likely do without it.

Was that one leaving you drained early on before the effect faded? Has the sleepiness cleared up since? You'd give it top marks overall?

GreyAlder96archiveMay 8

With so many different things going on it's hard for me to determine anything definite regarding ss31. Still I took two kits dosing four milligrams per day back when I was bulking months earlier. As I begin the cycling time now I'm exceeding my own prior achievements. Other factors at work were cardarine bromantane motsc along with an added eighteen pounds of lean body mass.

Figuring out which personal accounts are genuine versus those from sellers promoting their own stuff is really hard for me, particularly over on Reddit. Those glowing peptide success stories with wild transformation pictures catch my eye, yet examining the user's history shows they've been marketing peptides all along.

PlainTimber26archiveMay 8

Appreciate the info shared here. I've hesitated regarding starting this because of the high cost. It seems unlikely to provide enough advantages to justify it. Adding anything else feels risky when tirz works so amazingly well.

It's funny how that turns out to be the issue. Everyone takes lots of different stuff so figuring out the source of the effect becomes really tough. Trying them individually just doesn't happen for me.

SharpHarbour41archiveMay 8

I'm planning to test a single package of SS-31. I have no idea if this will lead to any changes, but I intend to try it out one time.

GreyAnchor47archiveMay 12

I've been pairing this peptide with my other regimen from the start and we've both been in use for nine weeks now. It's turned out quite useful for me. The other compound hasn't brought on tiredness even as the pounds came off, plus aerobic sessions feel less demanding. Being fifty-five and postmenopausal, I began at one milligram daily across five days weekly, stepped up to three milligrams on that same pattern, and only this week tried five milligrams daily. Truthfully five milligrams feels like too high a dose and leaves me with minor irritation where I inject. I really value what this addition has given me since menopausal tiredness once kept me from wanting to exercise at all.

Right now we're stuck with personal experiences because no proper studies on people have been reviewed and published. The same goes for most compounds like this where everyone guesses based on what happened in animal research.

When throughout your daily routine do you consume that?

SharpBramble33archiveMay 13

Ugh, three packages holding vials at ten milligrams each turned out totally pointless.

GreenQuill96archiveMay 13

I sometimes wonder whether folks try these regimens, feel nothing right away, and then decide they are useless. After poking around a little on my own, though I could easily have the details wrong, it looks like someone might need 180 to 360 milligrams of SS-31 plus the same quantity of MOTS-C every other day. Adding roughly 100 milligrams of NAD+ on two or three days per week could be worthwhile too. Results probably do not appear until a person reaches forty or beyond, or maybe thirty if they have already put their body through a lot with alcohol and stimulants.

Damn, that remark got me pondering the combination after you described the type of people who benefit from it.

Even though that opening message came from an AI, it lines up with what turned up in my own search on the compound. The tests used actual people instead of lab animals, though only a handful exist and they aimed at separate goals. Approval came recently for one rare inherited mitochondrial condition as a therapy, yet nearly every other trial fell short. Minor changes appeared here and there but rarely reached real statistical weight, which points to something that either does nothing or falls well below useful levels. It feels frustrating to read about strong animal data, like big gains in activity levels among older rodents, then discover either no matching human work or results like these that simply did not hold up. Clearance for that single condition reveals nothing about value for anyone else. Rodent or mouse outcomes lose all weight once the human side shows failure, proving the item does not deliver. I share the point that plenty of web material blends lab or cell findings with human ones on purpose, creating wrong impressions around safety and results for many similar substances. The homemade regimens stand out as especially misleading because they act like prior checks have already confirmed they are reliable and effective. Constant echoing of those wrong claims makes them feel factual through repetition alone, which helps with sales or persuasion but works against real accuracy in research or treatment.

I always do the shot first thing before eating anything.

LevelMarble56archiveMay 13

Got myself some SS-31 in a ten milligram kit and I'm shooting four milligrams each morning on an empty stomach. Nothing else is in my stack besides the GLP1. Two weeks in and the mild tiredness from the GLP1 hasn't eased up at all, plus no other changes I can notice. Could be not enough time has passed or my amount is insufficient, yet I have no interest in dropping more cash since this compound costs a lot. Probably won't bother trying once more.

QuietSignal61archiveMay 14

Maybe I shouldn't jump to conclusions here. Since there's plenty available, increasing the amount could reveal the effects. Avoid letting our comments discourage an initial test. It should at least activate the MotsC, which has its benefits. Wow, that could trigger a severe allergic reaction. Although under thirty, my past included extended meth consumption. Time will tell how it goes, haha. I got fortunate obtaining one of those kits, even if delivery takes a while. Still, it's unfortunate how managing wellness works out. Having more money makes things simpler.

SharpBramble33archiveMay 14

Research pointed to trial participants using forty milligrams daily across a full two months with that compound. I'll go with a cautious amount instead and share my experience after six or eight weeks. This quantity at the listed rate looks like a real bargain compared to earlier options I've noticed even when discounted.

WryMarble33archiveMay 14

Support for benefits from this compound among fit individuals remains limited or contradictory. Those of us running personal tests face issues from expecting payoffs after spending cash along with the mental pull to see changes anyway. I count myself in that group the same as anyone. Years spent doing research showed me that without tracking a shift there is no way to make it better. For the growth hormone related items I use at varying points during the day I check one blood marker. Sleep devices see plenty of use yet hardly anyone runs real number analysis on the records. With the weight loss agents I track body mass readings and wear a glucose monitor for brief stretches now and then. Still descriptions of having more pep tend to rest on how a session felt which likely fails to show real results.

GreenQuill96archiveMay 14
↳ replying to @QuietSignal61

To avoid any mix up the full quantity works out to between one hundred eighty and three hundred sixty milligrams spread across those twelve weeks which means five to ten milligrams each time I take it I sure would not waste that kind of cash on a single use either.

KeenQuill92archiveMay 14
↳ replying to @WryMarble33

My thoughts function identically in this regard. Occasionally believing something helps can have a bigger impact after paying a higher amount for it. When an item delivers results just for that person it ends up being valuable to them.

PlainKettle23archiveMay 15

On its own this item produces no noticeable change for me. The other supplement by itself provides definite improvements. Pairing them together in my exercise preparation has completely changed how my sessions feel. I can keep going for ages with no tiredness whatsoever.
