Does reta cause reduction in nutrient absorption

6 replies3 peopleJun 29, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Does reta reduce nutrient absorption and cause muscle loss during a reverse diet?

The original poster reports losing 9 lbs of muscle on DEXA after starting reta at 2 mg/week while increasing calories and cutting cardio, despite consistent lifting and clean eating. Replies focus on DEXA measurement limits, machine differences, and how lean the reported body-fat levels are for a woman rather than confirming any absorption effect from reta. No studies are cited and the thread stays centered on data accuracy and timeline details.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Participants differ on how much trust to place in DEXA numbers and whether the reported 10 % body fat is realistic or healthy.

Still open

Whether reta actually reduces nutrient absorption or what else explains the muscle drop on the scans.

Nothing here is advice.

Hey everyone. Since January I've dropped 9 pounds of muscle. Strangely, at the end of January I ended a tough cut, increased my calories by 800, and cut back on cardio to 1.5-2 hours a week now. The main change was beginning reta at 2 mg per week. I'm confused about losing muscle even though I'm lifting weights 5-6 days weekly and following a clean eating plan. Body fat rose from 10 % to 14 %, so why the big muscle drop? Any research out there showing reta reduces how well nutrients get absorbed?

Yes, it might affect absorption. But first, tell me about your measurements—how did you track the muscle loss? Remember lean mass includes more than just muscle. Also, when did the weight loss begin and what were your starting and current numbers?

A DEXA scan was what I relied on for measurements. Being female, back in January when my dieting phase wrapped up, my body fat stood at ten percent while tipping the scales at one hundred thirty six pounds. Over the following half year I boosted my daily intake by eight hundred calories and cut back on aerobic sessions from three hours down to about one and a half or two. Another scan recently showed fourteen percent body fat along with a slight drop to one hundred thirty three pounds, yet the entire change appears to have come from muscle loss alone. This leaves me puzzled about the reason.

Weight training promotes muscle building far better than aerobic exercise ever could. Body composition scans often suffer from measurement inconsistencies that complicate tracking minor shifts effectively. My next scan appointment is scheduled soon, with the initial one occurring in early January. Looking back over the details, it seems after the reduction phase there was an increase in intake, a decrease in aerobic work, and introduction of that medication? Just confirming the sequence of events. Reaching such low body fat levels as a woman stands out as unusually slim, beyond standard recommendations for health. Would sharing excerpts from the scan reports across those periods be something you're open to?

People rarely discuss how the actual equipment differs in reliability for these tests. Was the measurement taken on the exact same device every time? Outcomes can shift depending on the hardware involved. Not every scanner works at the same level either. Some spots focused on women's health seem to rely on lower-grade units. I usually head to a nearby university facility since their setup tends to be consistent. When I tried a clinic instead the numbers came out completely off compared to what I could see in the mirror. Going back to the university produced readings that matched earlier ones and aligned with my own reflection. That reported ten percent figure also seems hard to accept. Fourteen percent already counts as very low for a woman so ten would border on impossible. At that point someone would probably feel terrible as the body starts conserving resources.

Traveling sixty minutes is required for me to have this procedure completed at the usual spot. That idea you shared makes me want to explore options at another site. One advantage is using the exact same setup and technician every visit.

Every scan took place at one spot. Probably used the same device each visit. I added the side by side results from all my dexa tests. That ten percent reads low but lines up with contest condition. I got super shredded and felt awful haha
