Can’t tell if I have food poisoning or severe side-effects

Summary

Is stomach pain and bathroom urgency after starting Reta from the drug or something else like food poisoning

Users report that GI issues such as diarrhea and stomach pain often appear with dose increases of Reta and can last days after pinning. Several note the drug builds up over weeks so symptoms may show up later than expected. Others point to possible external causes like parasites in produce. Advice centers on dropping the dose temporarily and titrating more slowly if the problems continue.

Been using Reta for roughly a month but haven’t noticed much appetite suppression. Since Thursday my stomach hurts after meals or I end up in the bathroom right away. I don’t believe I ate anything bad. The same thing happened about three weeks earlier. Wondering if this is the Reta making my body reject food so I can’t eat much. Last pinned on Saturday and was going to pin again tonight but not sure if that’s smart while my stomach is off. Edit: 5’5 165 lbs and just started 2 mg weekly.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 11

How much are you taking and what have you been eating lately? Haven’t come across this before so you might want to get it checked.

I don’t take Reta myself. Share your weight, current dose, and any health issues so people who have used it can try to figure it out.

First time at 2 mg this week and my meals have been pretty clean and balanced.

I feel off after greasy food or overeating. Since you haven’t done that and this started with the dose increase you might want to lower it for a bit. GI side effects like this are fairly common with reta while your system adjusts. Did you recently mix up a fresh vial and maybe draw too much? Or was this right after moving from 1.5 to 2 mg?

BlueSignal97archiveJul 11

Could this be Cyclospariasis? Which state are you in because that’s been spreading fast.

Didn’t mix a new vial but I did go from 1 to 2 mg. It’s been a full week since that pin and the problems didn’t really start until around day five.

Pun intended. It really is spreading and they’re telling everyone to wash all produce thoroughly.

CopperQuill49archiveJul 11

Had the exact same issue the first time I tried Reta. Started at 1 mg and the bathroom urgency hit within a day. This round I began at 0.25 mg and so far it’s been fine. Planning to stay at that level for four full weeks before trying 0.5 mg.

It builds up in your system over several weeks. Doubling the dose on top of a higher amount probably triggered it. I’d drop back to 1 mg this week and monitor how you feel.

I’d skip a day or two before pinning again. Once you feel better go back to 1 mg per week. If you only miss a short time you can still keep the same day of the week. After two weeks at 1 mg with no issues you could try 1.5 mg for four weeks. Going slower seems right for you since the medicine hits hard. If it gets really bad see a doctor.

Hope it’s not that. I’ve been stepping up from 0.5 mg by half-milligram amounts and the symptoms only appeared once I hit 2 mg. Thanks for the heads-up.

WarmSparrow33archiveJul 11

I can’t handle reta because of the stomach problems. Tried the lowest dose of 1 mg and stayed there for months but it never improved. I stayed sick and nauseous for four days after each shot. Bodies react differently so don’t push through too long if it keeps happening.

When did this start the first time? Did you just mix a new vial and maybe take too much? Did you jump from 50 to 100 mg when it happened? If so try slowing down, go back to 60 mg and stay there longer. Don’t worry you’re not going anywhere. We’ll find you again. Did you try google maps? Want help getting found?

Hahahaha. I’m old so who knows what I’m doing. I’ll have to ask the nurses here. Honestly the original post lost me and then they edited it.

SharpTimber40archiveJul 12

I had a stomach bug a few weeks back and it was rough. The GLP seemed to make it feel worse. Could be a mix of a bug plus the dose building up. Around three to four weeks after a dose is when levels peak in the system.

QuietBramble77archiveJul 12

There’s a parasite going around the US in raw vegetables and fruits like salads and berries.

CopperSignal27archiveJul 12

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation are the most frequent side effects across all GLPs. They can show up for no clear reason, usually early on or after dose increases. Even a 0.5 mg jump still builds for four weeks afterward. Most effects calm down eventually but not always. I haven’t seen many long-term diarrhea reports so it probably isn’t common, though nausea can linger for weeks or months unless the dose is adjusted. Best to skip the next dose until things settle. Whether it’s a bug or the drug they usually pass quickly. If blood, fever or dehydration appear then see a doctor. Once it’s better drop back to the previous dose and titrate up more gradually from there.

Yeah there is and the news this morning said it’s spreading.

Washing produce isn’t enough unfortunately. I haven’t had diarrhea issues with my GLP in two years but a few days ago I had a painful night I’m sure came from a bag of salad.

CopperSignal46archiveJul 12

I get random reta diarrhea flare-ups with no obvious trigger and it can happen any time in the cycle. Usually only lasts a day. It always shows up when I raise the dose, typically day two or three. Right now I’m staying home because I went up yesterday and almost couldn’t make it back from a quick trip.

Same here, the timing is strange. Worst one was when I took my mom for knee surgery. Had to hold it for three and a half hours until they took her in then drove home like crazy.

It’s common to get some stomach pain like feeling overly full on Reta.

AmberLantern65archiveJul 13

Started at 0.2 mg and have only been on it two weeks. Main things I notice are feeling really full almost bloated and constipated so I take miralax every day to stay regular.

WarmAlder92archiveJul 13
↳ replying to @AmberLantern65

Miralax can turn into a habit. Make sure you’re getting enough fiber like at least 10 g of psyllium husk or Benefiber daily plus at least as many grams of protein as your lean body mass in pounds. That could be over 100 g a day from yogurt, chicken, eggs or protein powder. If appetite is down you might also be forgetting water and electrolytes.

WarmCompass44archiveJul 13

Are you lactose intolerant and maybe had some dairy? I learned fast that reta makes my lactose intolerance much worse.

AmberLantern65archiveJul 13

No I’m not but right now I wish I was because miralax isn’t working the last couple days. I might have to stop reta. I wish I could take fiber but either kind constipates me worse. I already had a slow gut before starting and the doctor said no fiber. My dad has the same issue and fiber causes blockages for him too.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 13
↳ replying to @AmberLantern65

I had that too and it eventually went away. The bloating didn’t hit me until I reached the 4 mg range.

AmberLantern65archiveJul 13

Doctor said I’m a super responder and starting at 1 mg could have caused stomach paralysis because of my already slow motility. Not sure if that’s accurate but who knows.

BrightMeadow71archiveJul 13

Only four side effects so far. Two expected: feel full on half the usual food and stay full long enough to skip meals. Two unexpected: hives two days after pinning that stopped with antihistamines and very dry mouth that improves with lots of fluids. No diarrhea or other GI trouble.
