Documenting my first time GLP-1

Summary

What dosing approach and early experiences should someone expect when starting retatrutide at 1 mg?

The original poster began at 1 mg weekly with minimal sides beyond fatigue, tracked weight loss of roughly 2.5 kg in two weeks, and chose to stay low rather than titrate quickly. Multiple responders advised holding each dose for several weeks, prioritizing protein, fiber, water, and movement over rapid escalation. Some noted constipation risks and the value of smaller effective doses, while others shared steady losses of 2–4 lbs weekly once at 2–4 mg without major issues.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

What dose will ultimately be needed once weight loss plateaus

Hi everyone. I want to keep this thread as a personal log so I can review it later and maybe pick up useful ideas from others. I gave myself the first shot yesterday evening, so just under 24 hours ago. I feel fine overall except for noticeable tiredness. Nothing to report yet on appetite changes or fullness, since hunger is still there right now. I began at 1 mg because other logs suggested it, though part of me wonders if 2 mg would have been better from the start. I am weighing whether to stay at 1 mg per week for about two weeks before going up, or to take 2 mg next week since I have travel the day after. I am already taking electrolytes and 5 g of fiber each morning while pushing water intake toward 2–3 liters daily. Starting weight: 136 kg. Current weight: 136 kg. Goal weight: 100 kg.

Stay on the current plan. The compound accumulates over time, so give it a chance to show what it does. Focus on protein, fiber, water, and lifting instead of pushing the dose higher right away.

GreenSignal63archiveJul 8

I began at half a milligram and kept that level for a full month before any increase. Weight came off anyway, so there is no hurry. Keep the 1 mg dose for at least a couple of weeks and simply monitor how your body reacts. Weigh yourself every morning with a good scale and log the numbers so you have clear data before deciding to go higher. In the beginning, electrolytes and water mattered a lot. I had never realized how easily eyes can dry out until using this compound. Good luck.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 8

I would go straight to 2 mg and hold that amount for four weeks. I raised the dose by 2 mg each time. I stayed at 4 mg for six weeks because it was still working, then moved to 6 mg for another six weeks once progress slowed. I am now in week three at 9 mg. There is nothing to fear here.

PlainQuill85archiveJul 8

Welcome. The main advice is to follow what feels right for you. Some people get good results at lower amounts while others need 6–8 mg before noticing much change.

ClearLantern70archiveJul 8

Given that your target is only 2–3 liters of water, starting at 1 mg was probably sensible. That volume is fairly low once fiber is added. Responses vary, but everyone I know on this compound has dealt with constipation to some degree. For most it was mild and fixed by adding prunes and doubling water, plus drinking with meals. One person ended up in the ER after eating pizza on day one and going four days without relief.

ClearLantern70archiveJul 8

The point is not simply taking the compound but getting the results you personally need. Some cannot manage eating without help, while others only need a small assist. There is often more benefit in using a lower amount than pushing for a higher one.

Thanks for the replies. I have decided to follow my original plan and not increase yet. This is a long-term effort, not something to rush. I already prep the same two or three meals for lunch and dinner each week and keep breakfast consistent. Everything else gets weighed and logged. I am working on replacing diet sodas with plain water. Appreciate the heads-up about possible issues.

IronKettle95archiveJul 8

If no bad effects show up, try 1.5 mg next week and then 2 mg the week after. Some people reach 4 mg weekly or switch to splitting the dose.

Four weeks on one dose lets it build up before the next step. That is my view and the view of many others.

Welcome aboard. I started at 1 mg for three weeks, moved to 2 mg for three more weeks, and am now at 4 mg. No stall so far and I am dropping about 3–4 lbs each week. I eat at my BMR of 2000 calories, track everything, and keep protein near 200 g. Carbs come mostly from salads and fruit. I plan to remain at 4 mg until a stall lasts four weeks or longer. I walk 2–3 miles three times a week and do some resistance work in the evenings. Food noise has dropped enough that better choices feel easier. A smart scale shows muscle is holding steady while 32.9 lbs have come off in roughly seven weeks.

Nice work. Using the compound as a tool while still eating properly and moving is the right way. You are the one losing the weight, not the medication. Keep going.

This is the right mindset. You do not need to become a gym fanatic, just stay active. I lift for 30–45 minutes and aim for 10 000 steps while eating well and letting the compound help with decisions at key moments.

Be cautious with rapid loss. There is a thread here discussing whether losing weight too quickly can be harmful. I have heard the same concern for years. The line between fast but safe and actually damaging is not always clear.

KeenWillow41archiveJul 9

I would slow down if possible, but the current routine is what I am following. I am concerned about gallbladder effects, yet given my diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, fatty liver, and obesity, the benefits of improving those conditions outweigh the risk for me.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 9

If needed, dropping back to 3 mg or 2 mg for a period is straightforward. I averaged 2.2 lbs per week since the start of the year.

PlainAlder90archiveJul 9

I began at the same amount and did not notice appetite control until reaching 2 mg. If weight is coming off, that is what counts. I chose to increase slowly because others said tolerance does not really go back down once raised.

That pace works well for you. Four milligrams is the lowest dose from the studies that is not considered a starter amount. I reached that level and will stay there until a six-week stall occurs. My loss has slowed from the early weeks to 2–3 lbs weekly. I am under medical supervision with daily scale readings sent to the team and full tracking of food, exercise, and blood sugar. They say progress is good. Labs are scheduled next week to recheck liver values that were elevated before.

No need to make it personal. Follow the plan you and your doctor set. When joining a new group it helps to stay civil.

I am also new. Your update gave me several things to consider. Thanks for posting it.

One note on liver numbers: mine rose slightly after about eight weeks even though I expected improvement. Some reports mention a temporary increase from the compound itself or from hard training days. Cholesterol numbers moved in a positive direction by 15–20 percent, so overall the labs are heading the right way.

Second injection day. The first week went smoothly even while traveling. Sticking to the meal plan has been easier than expected. Workouts have been mostly long walks plus one lifting session. I will add more lifting once the kid is not around. I stayed at 1 mg again and plan to go to 2 mg next week. Stats after week 1: starting weight 136 kg, current weight 134.3 kg, goal 100 kg.

SlowCompass30archiveJul 21

Pinning day again. This week I learned how weight training feels after nearly two weeks at 1700–2000 calories with almost no carbs. I felt unusually weak and had to bail on a bench press. Adding some cream of rice before sessions has helped restore strength. No real side effects beyond occasional tiredness that may also come from heat and lower calories. Weight is still moving, so I see no reason to increase yet. Stats after week 2: starting weight 136 kg, current weight 133.5 kg, goal 100 kg.
