Gag Reflex on Reta

15 replies11 peopleMay 24, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Has retatrutide caused a more sensitive gag reflex or stronger reactions to smells?

Multiple users report a noticeably heightened gag reflex after starting reta, often beginning around 4 mg per week, with triggers including tooth brushing, swallowing multiple pills, and certain odors that can lead to actual vomiting. Some find the effect temporary and fading after 2-3 weeks while others continue to manage it by splitting pills or avoiding triggers. Dry mouth is frequently mentioned in the same timeframe but does not always coincide with gagging episodes.

My gag reflex turned much more sensitive after starting reta. I cannot have any liquid before brushing my teeth and tongue in the morning or I gag and get sick. Smells I used to handle now affect me strongly. After three drinks spread over five and a half hours I stepped outside into cigarette smoke and gagged until I was sick. Has anyone else developed a gag reflex sensitive enough to cause actual vomiting? Searches show some gagging reports with Tirz but the change has been clear and steady for me.

I have as well. Swallowing a handful of pills used to be no problem but now I split them up. Once the gagging starts it is hard to stop. My gag reflex was almost nonexistent before so this takes some adjustment. It does not really make me sick though.

Yes, once it starts it is definitely hard to stop and I had no issue at all before. Glad it is not only me. I also struggle to swallow more than one supplement at a time. I have not seen much on forums about how to fix this so if you find anything that helps let me know.

Among the initial effects I spotted this came up first. It appeared right after exceeding two milligrams weekly. Now that I'm at four milligrams a week the problem has mostly faded. My swallowing reflex acted up for two to three weeks but returned to usual. I never dealt with bad nausea from odors though.

Dry mouth is a known side effect. Drink plenty from your water bottles.

Yes, I definitely have the gagging reflex too. No knowledge or tricks to reduce it. For me the biggest triggers are brushing teeth and swallowing supplements. Ugh.

PlainAlder11archiveMay 25

No gag but the dry mouth while sleeping is present and started a few weeks ago.

PatientHarbour23archiveMay 25

I cannot blame reta specifically but the whole GLP class in general. I wake up repulsed by everything and can barely tolerate food until later in the day.

SlowThistle29archiveMay 25

Yep, the gag reflex is worse when I brush my teeth.

GreyCompass76archiveMay 25

I've noticed a slight cough from a tickle in my throat, though it's not anything like gagging. I can't tell if this is just a random bug I picked up right after I began reta or if it's tied to how my system reacts to it. Has anyone else gone through the same?

SteadyTimber49archiveMay 25

That's curious. Dryness hit my mouth a few times, yet I never spotted any stronger gag reflex. Strange situation.

CopperTimber95archiveMay 25

Yeah I get that. These days spotting recent puke or crap sets off my strong heaving urge right away.

I have definitely had dry mouth as well especially after sleeping but the gagging and vomiting does not seem directly linked to times when my mouth was dry. Gagging for me has been since 4 mg and I am on 6 mg now.

Yup, watched a film earlier today which had lots of snot and vomit in it plus one scene eating an insect and that set off the gagging.

Haven't come across anything useful yet so I'm just getting by for now. I'll tell you if something turns up though.

I am starting to think the dry mouth is from the bedtime gummy.
