Berberine helped break plateau

7 replies5 peopleJul 2, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Can berberine help break a weight loss plateau while on tirzepatide or other GLP-1s, and is the combination safe?

One user on compounded tirzepatide for nine months reported breaking a five-pound stall at 5mg by adding 2000mg berberine daily and reaching goal weight in a week. Others note berberine comes from turmeric, has anti-inflammatory effects, and is sometimes called nature's Ozempic or metformin, though evidence is mixed. Discussion covers whether berberine is contraindicated with GLP-1s, with some citing hypoglycemia risk similar to stacking other compounds and others pointing out that reta itself can cause low blood sugar and that individual tolerance varies widely.

Been using compounded tirzepatide for nine months now. Hit a stall five pounds short of my target after dropping 70 pounds total, staying at 5mg because I didn't want to increase for those last bits. Added 2000mg of berberine daily and suddenly dropped below goal in just a week.

Never come across berberine until now. Looks like I need to look into it some more.

It's the main ingredient from turmeric, usually combined with black pepper and cinnamon. People call it nature's ozempic, though I'm not sure, the research seems promising but not conclusive, still I enjoy using it. Took it frequently during my previous weight loss effort, which was my best one before starting GLP meds, along with diet and exercise. Also has good anti-inflammatory effects.

Berberine? Calling it nature's Ozempic is quite a stretch, way over the top. Maybe nature's metformin would fit better.

Aren't there warnings against combining berberine with GLP-1 medications?

What do you mean? Berberine and metformin aren't forbidden with GLP-1s, since many diabetics use both metformin and a GLP-1 together. But combining too many things that lower blood sugar might cause problems for some people.

Yeah, I read it's similar to stacking stimulants or clen with reta due to heart rate concerns. Berberine plus GLP-1 might drop blood sugar too low, leading to hypoglycemia.

Reta itself can lead to low blood sugar without anything else. It's one of those cases where the amount determines the harm, and individuals vary in tolerance. Some diabetics might require reta along with metformin and empagliflozin for control, but that mix would probably be too much for me. People fall at different points on the spectrum.
