Reta causing low or no sex drive?

13 replies8 peopleJan 22, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Does retatrutide reduce libido and what might be causing or fixing it?

Several users link the drop in sex drive to ongoing calorie restriction from the drug, which can produce fatigue, emotional flatness, and shifts in hormones such as elevated SHBG that lowers free testosterone. Others report the opposite effect with noticeably higher drive. Adjusting antidepressant doses, returning briefly to maintenance calories with adequate carbs and fats, or lowering the reta dose have helped some regain interest, while bloodwork is recommended to rule out other issues.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Some participants report low or absent libido while others describe markedly higher drive on the same medication.

Hey everyone, has anyone else noticed this after starting reta? I began last July at tiny amounts like 0.25 mg and worked my way up to 3 mg weekly. The weight has come off steadily and it's been great. Now I'm at my target and just trying to hold there. The trouble is my interest in sex has vanished completely. It wasn't extremely high before but it wasn't missing either. Looking back the change seems to line up with when I started. Anyone else dealing with the same thing? Could it be tied to reta?

It lines up with what the medication can do. A number of people on these types of drugs notice lower drive and it often connects to how they change appetite, energy and mood. Even while maintaining weight most are still eating less than before, and that lower energy intake can leave someone tired because the body is adjusting to less fuel. This is a known result of eating fewer calories overall. The drug can also produce a kind of emotional flatness or lower motivation in some because it touches reward pathways in the brain, so things that used to feel rewarding can seem dull. GLP-1 activity influences those same brain circuits. Weight loss and lower calories can also move hormone levels like estrogen and testosterone, which affects desire too. So even

I've been dealing with exactly this for roughly the past year and a half. Desire has been completely gone. Before starting Tirz I was always up for things, but about four months in after dropping around twenty pounds the interest disappeared. I have hardly been intimate with my wife for the last sixteen months or so. She has been very understanding but it has been frustrating. I looked into it and while there is some mention that it can happen it seems uncommon. It appears tied to the same reward system that reduces food cravings. Switching to reta did not change anything. I wondered if I was just stuck until I read about possible interactions with antidepressants and GLP-1s. I cut my dose of that medication in half and two weeks later things are not back to normal but I am noticing more interest again. It might be wishful thinking but it feels like a positive shift worth noting.

I have not run into this at all. In fact it has been the reverse for me.

Could it be high cortisol? Are you doing any resistance training and eating properly? Also do you mind sharing your gender and age?

GreenPebble69archiveJan 25

For me it has been the complete opposite, like a raging bull.

I had the same thing at the beginning but after roughly a month it returned.

Wow, that description fits me perfectly. I have been trying to explain how I have been feeling and emotional flatness captures it exactly. At my yearly checkup I asked my doctor if it was normal at my age not to feel excited anymore and she said it is just part of getting older. She also does not know I am taking reta. This lines up so well and it is good to know I am not the only one. Thanks a lot.

I had not considered how it might interact with the bupropion I take every day at the lowest dose. I will try taking it every other day and see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

I do workouts five or six times a week, a bootcamp style mix of strength and cardio days. I am female and will turn 42 next month. As for eating well, not really. Appetite is low so I try to get some protein in but I am nowhere near 50 g a day and I know that is not good.

Same here with bupropion. I dropped from 300 to 150 and it has definitely helped.

Just adding my experience here, though I am not a doctor. After six months on reta plus two months of natural calorie deficit beforehand I got a full set of blood tests because I also felt flat and had quite low libido. Nothing else showed up and overall health looks good. My SHBG came back very high at 81, which I think stems from the ongoing deficit sometimes a thousand calories below TDEE putting the body into protection mode. From what I understand the high SHBG is binding a lot of free testosterone which explains the low drive and flat tired feeling. I have since lowered my dose and increased calories.

This is so helpful. I also had a full panel done and my SHBG is 92. I did not think much of it at the time because the app showed it within range though on the higher side. I am also considering lowering my dose to see if feelings and libido return. Thanks so much.

Glad it helped. What worked for me was going back to maintenance calories for a couple of weeks, keeping carbs reasonably high or even a bit higher, and making sure to include healthy fats for hormone support. That should get things moving again so you can continue your progress. Good luck.
