Polyethylene glycol works well and can be used long term without issues. I take three quarters of a dose every other day. It needs two to five days before it starts helping. For quick relief an enema works best.
I began reta on April 8 at half a milligram. Constipation has always been an issue for me, and the only times I recall decent bowel movements were periods when I avoided ice cream, pizza, alcohol, and cola. By decent I mean going roughly every seven to nine days with a large but manageable stool. After starting reta I ate ice cream several days straight and ended up with a very difficult bowel movement on May 10 that required medication to finish. Today on May 19, after nine days of decent food, no alcohol, and no bowel movement, things got even worse. I am now at two milligrams of reta. The medication seems to make stools firmer, though I know my body tends this way anyway. I bought magnesium oxide capsules but read they should not be taken daily. I want to stay on reta because it works, yet I cannot face another episode like this. I have cut out ice cream and milk products entirely, though one item in my diet still contains lactose.
