Lost strength in gym

Summary

Why am I losing strength in the gym on retatrutide during fat loss and what helps?

Users report strength drops as normal from calorie deficits, glycogen depletion due to higher insulin sensitivity, and rapid weight loss affecting hormones and hydration. Fixes mentioned include eating more carbs before sessions, hitting protein targets around 1 g per lb of lean mass, adding creatine, and increasing overall food intake while some added recovery compounds. A few maintained or gained strength with high training volume plus TRT and GH support, but weight loss often slowed as a result.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Some view extra recovery compounds as necessary to preserve strength while others see diet adjustments alone as sufficient

How long after stopping retatrutide before it regains full effectiveness on restart

Been using reta for about four months and seen solid fat loss results. Now tapering the dose down gradually to stop completely. Curious whether others have felt weaker during workouts while on it.

What was your weekly weight drop? How long have you been lifting steadily? Strength usually declines in a deficit, especially once you pass beginner stages, but it tends to return once calories move back to maintenance.

Just a heads up that restarting later tends to produce weaker results than the first run.

This usually traces back to the calorie deficit itself, whether or not meds are involved. Hard training without enough fuel leaves you feeling drained.

Very common when running a deficit.

Workouts became much tougher and I had to drop weights after beginning reta. Carbs before training gave a little energy boost but strength still slipped. Adding GH secretagogues turned it around for me, with tesamorelin working better than the others and allowing strength gains again. I have lifted over thirty years, three sessions weekly. Recovery seems improved. I also restarted five milligrams of creatine daily around the same time, which probably contributed. Weight loss has mostly stopped the past month though, a tradeoff I accept since keeping strength matters more than the scale right now. I am within fifteen pounds of goal.

Roughly two point two pounds of lean mass come off with every ten pounds lost on reta. Train hard to protect muscle, especially past age forty.

As others noted this is expected. Focus on hitting protein, EAAs plus electrolytes, and creatine to reduce how much muscle and strength you lose while still training consistently.

A few factors are at play. The obvious one is any calorie or protein shortfall, so check your macros and totals because you may be eating far less than needed. Glycogen also gets pulled from muscles because reta boosts insulin sensitivity and changes glucose handling, leaving them flatter. Try a small fast-digesting carb and protein snack about forty five minutes before lifting. Keep protein at one gram per pound of lean body mass without going overboard. Fast weight loss also shifts hormones and slows gastric emptying, which can affect hydration and electrolytes, so drink more water and add electrolytes.

Sometimes it comes down to insufficient sleep or food. I can usually tell from just sitting whether a session will go well.

Keeping carbs up helps my gym performance quite a bit.

I have added strength and muscle while dropping thirty one point three pounds since mid June. Trained daily with twenty one sets of heavy lifts plus an hour of cardio, sometimes two. TRT and GH give an advantage but consistent heavy training also protected muscle. I aim for two hundred grams of protein daily without counting calories and still eat carbs even late some days.

This week I lowered reta from twelve to six milligrams weekly so I could eat at maintenance. Resetting to include carbs before and after workouts helped energy return. Moving from a long cut into maintenance is tough but necessary. Without the deficit I probably would not need an energy stack to fight the fatigue. Appetite now pushes for over one hundred fifty grams of carbs before training and more afterward. Scale weight has stayed steady and appearance remains good.

GreenSignal63archiveSep 2

Track calories because you can probably eat more than you think. Adding around seven hundred daily still let me lose weight while feeling stronger in the gym.

Finishing reta by end of month and will not restart unless needing another cut later. Over two years dropped twenty kilograms from one hundred eleven to ninety one. About six or seven came off on reta. At thirty five recovery takes longer. Food choices were limited for months while working in camps but now cooking for myself so protein and total intake have risen. Mainly carnivore with some yogurt and rice. Planning to try tesamorelin and ipamorelin next along with another recovery aid for rugby knee issues after finishing research.

Normal experience. I saw the same thing tied to muscle tissue loss. Raising protein intake is probably needed.

Reta lingers in the system roughly four to six weeks after the last dose. Any idea how long someone should wait before it works as well as the first time?

BrightCompass53archiveSep 14

Dropped about sixty pounds since January. Around the forty pound mark strength started declining or at best holding steady. Intermediate lifter with four years of three sessions weekly. At heaviest I could bench two twenty five for six to eight reps, now struggling for six and sometimes only four. Creatine helped but slowed the scale too much so I stopped even though it is mostly water. Still hooked on watching weekly drops.
