PSA: You deserve clothing that fits you now

Summary

Should I buy clothes that fit during weight loss or wait until I reach my goal?

People in the thread share that wearing ill-fitting clothes while losing weight often feels sloppy and self-punishing. Many have turned to secondhand sources for temporary pieces and report an emotional lift from clothes that actually fit now. Some note their body image lags behind the scale, making it hard to judge sizes. A few keep old clothes as a reminder or safety net, while others toss everything to avoid looking back.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether to keep any old larger clothes as insurance or get rid of them all to commit to the new size.

Nothing here is advice.

A bunch of people I know are still wearing loose, baggy outfits, bras that slip, and pants that are way too big after dropping several sizes. They complain about looking silly but say they won't spend on anything new until they hit their final weight. Even friends who can afford it seem to be holding back as some kind of punishment for having been heavier. This isn't aimed at anyone who truly can't budget for it right now or who just doesn't care about clothes anyway.

WarmWillow50archiveMay 8

I'm pretty frugal about clothes so I look for used pieces. The only new things I've bought are a dress for a wedding and some undergarments. With just a little more to go I can probably pick up a few lasting items like jackets and tops, but pants will have to wait because my shape is still changing.

GreenMeadow27archiveMay 8

I get my current clothes secondhand except for the basics that need to be new. Once I reach my goal I'll buy fresh things. Baggy clothes just make me feel messy, and even on a tight budget I can manage a few inexpensive pairs of jeans.

I grabbed a new shirt without realizing how much I'd lost and got it in XXL. Once I tried it on it was obvious it was too big. It's a good feeling when sizes keep dropping.

Same here. My mind still pictures me at my heaviest.

ClearCinder61archiveMay 8

My weight has gone up and down over the years so my closet ended up holding everything from my smallest to largest sizes. I finally went through what I already owned and found several pairs of jeans and other pieces that actually fit now. Some are even loose. Later I'll probably look for more used items and pass on what I no longer need.

Looking forward to dealing with this issue someday.

Clothes aren't what make me happy, but I also haven't bought any in years. After this round of loss I hope to try styles I've never worn before. At least I still have my old oversized things for now.

It takes time for your head to adjust to the new reality.

I've been working on this for almost five years and my mind still hasn't caught up.

I really should shop more, but right now I'm in a weird spot. I still order my old larger size online even though I've dropped down. The latest package was supposed to be a medium but it was still hanging off me.

WarmAnchor49archiveMay 8

I used to stick to loose styles but now I prefer things that fit closer. Shopping secondhand for fitted pieces feels good and makes me feel more visible. I enjoy picking out clothes more than I used to.

Random comment about size, and for me it's just casual shorts and band tees with basic sneakers.

SteadyQuill55archiveMay 8

I agree. I used to order without trying things on, but now I go in person because I'll look at a tiny pair of pants and think there's no way. Then they fit, which shows I still can't picture my current size accurately.

I have no idea what to wear these days and could use help from someone who knows fashion. I usually just grab practical farm clothes and boots, so stepping up my style feels overwhelming.

This post really resonates. I stopped buying anything because I refused to get more oversized clothes. Lately I've noticed a boost from being able to pull jeans on and off without undoing them. My old belts looked silly so I finally replaced them and pulled out some smaller jeans I had saved. It feels good to wear things that fit, though I'm not excited about shopping. I've cleared out big clothes before only to need them again, but this time the tools feel different.

PatientHarbour23archiveMay 8

You don't need a whole new wardrobe at once. Just a couple of bras, some underwear, two or three pairs of pants you can rotate, and a few tops. Wear them until they get too big, then replace them. I used to buy a couple pairs of jeans on sale in a size that was almost too tight and kept repeating that cycle.

Three things I skip: umbrellas, straws, and sandals.

I've been doing the same until I reach my final weight. I had no jeans that fit so I had to. I still have enough summer clothes for now so I won't need to worry again until next year.

PatientAlder89archiveMay 8

We all deserve to look nice, but I really value comfort. Yoga pants are my default unless I have to dress up.

NorthMarble18archiveMay 8

I tend to buy one size larger than what actually fits, just in case I put some weight back on.

The disappearing rear end thing! I can relate. My chest is the only part still carrying size and I'm getting used to a flatter shape.

I found vacuum bags under the bed with clothes that never fit but I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them earlier. My mom is good at alterations so she helped with some nicer work pieces. The rest I donated. My sister-in-law has been shopping secondhand the whole time and has found a lot of new-with-tags items that way.

LevelTimber64archiveMay 8

I've held onto a shirt and some trousers from my heavier days. Now feels like the right moment to clear them out of the house. They don't serve any purpose at all.

LevelWillow41archiveMay 8

I'd like some better-fitting clothes but I'm not sure how much time or effort I want to put into temporary pieces.

WarmWillow50archiveMay 8

I did the same and got rid of everything that was too big. It's a mental thing for me. I don't want reminders of the past sitting around, and pictures are enough. No going back.

WarmWillow50archiveMay 8
↳ replying to @LevelWillow41

That's the nice thing about secondhand shops, you can grab a few things to get by for now.

You already dress great. Adding a few fitted tanks would show off the muscle. If you lived nearby I'd take you shopping.

My partner mentioned I looked a bit frail the other day. Weight sits differently in my sixties and he thinks I'm starting to look thin at my current number. I'm thinking about getting a gym membership after riding season to build more muscle.

WarmHarbour28archiveMay 9

Every week while waiting in a parking lot I notice most women going inside are wearing black leggings. Is there any variety in style anymore?

WryHarbour43archiveMay 10

After multiple large weight changes I tend to hold on to clothes that don't fit in case the situation reverses. I actually have a bunch of things waiting for when I hit goal, even if some styles are dated by then. One thing I've learned is that the same weight can look different now because of changes in muscle, so old benchmarks may not match up anymore.

SlowSignal40archiveMay 10

Serves me right for acting like I don't care about clothes. I was just given a t-shirt for an anniversary date I was hoping to ignore. Can't stop people from gifting things.

Trying to stop us has the opposite effect, and my partner can confirm.

I can stop mine if I decide to. The problem was I was sick with the flu and forgot the birthday was coming up.

I saved one full outfit from my heavier days so I could see how far I've come.

GreenThistle62archiveMay 12

Still wearing work pants that look ridiculous on me now. I did buy some shorts in a much smaller size that fit better. I'm not looking forward to spending on a whole work wardrobe again.
