New to Reta: Early weight loss questions

11 replies7 peopleOct 6, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

How should someone new to retatrutide handle calorie intake and diet to lose visceral fat without triggering metabolic adaptation or losing muscle?

Participants describe starting at low weekly doses after switching from tirzepatide, eating around 1000 calories without hunger or side effects, and tracking body-composition changes. Advice centers on keeping protein high, adding electrolytes and some carbs, using an app to set a sustainable deficit, and recognizing that overall fat loss will reduce visceral stores. Several note that adding growth-hormone secretagogues may cause water retention and stall scale weight.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether additional peptides beyond retatrutide are helpful early on or mainly cause water retention that masks progress.

Evening everyone on the weight-loss board. There is so much to absorb and I am picking things up each day. Right now my question is about food. My current plan seems to be working, showing fat coming off while muscle edges up a little. I am not aiming to build muscle, only to drop fat, especially the visceral kind. A previous crash diet that pushed protein and cut calories hard left me in starvation mode; once I returned to normal eating the weight came back mostly as visceral fat rather than under the skin. On reta I find myself in another big deficit and that worries me. Today I had protein at every meal and in shakes, added fiber, took my multi, and grazed throughout the day. One salad with salmon came to about 500 calories and the rest of the snacks added another 500. I never feel hungry, digestion is normal, and I have zero side effects. Still, I am anxious that such a low intake will make my body hold on to the visceral fat I am trying to get rid of.

We need more details first. Have you actually begun reta and at what weekly amount? We went low-carb with meat, fresh vegetables mostly steamed, cottage cheese, protein shakes at lunch, and cut back sharply on beer. We skipped calorie counting entirely and had no side effects at all. Just be sure electrolytes stay topped up.

Grab the loseit app, set activity to sedentary, and do not eat back any exercise calories. Pick a dose that lets you stay in a deficit without discomfort. If the scale moves, visceral fat will come down with it.

Five hundred calories a day will not last unless you want thinning hair, poor sleep, muscle loss, and worse health. Add rice and other carbs. That 500-calorie mark is basically what I get from two scoops of protein mixed with Greek yogurt and a banana. You probably need at least three times that much food.

The total was one thousand calories, five hundred from the meal and five hundred from snacks.

I had already titrated tirz from 2.5 mg up to 7.5 mg across three months. I began reta last Saturday and this post is from Monday. Current schedule is 1 mg on Tuesday and again on Saturday for a 2 mg weekly total. I intend to increase to 6 mg and possibly 8 mg later if needed. I am also using KLOW, Mots-c, and NAD+. Later I plan to cycle Tesa/ipa with KLOW using four weeks on and six weeks off.

Tesa and ipa usually slow visible weight loss because they cause water retention. Most people get better results from those peptides once they are already close to their target weight. Not sure how far along you are.

When I cannot manage solid food I fall back on nutritional shakes. Protein comes first before carbs or anything else. That approach has worked fine for me through twenty-two weeks on reta.

I had been told about possible extra hunger from the growth-hormone type peptides but not about water retention. My main goal is to attack visceral fat quickly and aggressively. The plan is low-dose cycles of 1 mg each, six days a week for six weeks, then two cycles while off KLOW. KLOW itself is 3 mg daily for four weeks on and six off. I stay active with walking and light lifting to keep muscle and burn fat. So far the numbers show 1.4 lb muscle gained and 18 lb fat lost. I am still early in the process and figuring things out. Thanks for the input.

All these extra injections are confusing to me. I do not mind what others choose, but I simply used reta once a week and dropped sixty pounds since January. I have been on maintenance for a couple of months now.

I do not know how much you have to lose, but the main way to cut visceral fat is simply to lose fat overall; the visceral stores shrink along with everything else. Tirz or reta will therefore outperform the secretagogues, which realistically only move a few kilos. If you are already gaining muscle while losing fat, the extra growth-hormone stimulators may not be necessary. From what you have shared you are on 7.5 mg tirz plus 1 mg reta, have lost 18 lb fat and added 1.4 lb muscle since starting three months ago, yet we still lack age, height, starting weight, or goal weight. That background would help when offering advice. Your worry about needing more calories suggests the glp dose is currently too high, so lowering it is the direct fix. In the short term richer, higher-fat foods can help, but I am not convinced you must force intake that high.
