Do you even care what you eat??

Summary

how does this medication change interest in food taste and cooking

Users on the medication describe a sharp drop in appetite and enjoyment of meals, shifting from creative cooking and flavor focus to mechanical eating based on protein targets and macros. Some still season lightly or plan occasional satisfying meals, while others eat the same bland items daily or rely on shakes and minimal prep. Weight loss continues steadily for most, though a few note they are trying to eat more to maintain or enjoy social meals.

I only eat whole foods with rare exceptions and have done so for years. I used to love cooking creatively with spices and wine and people liked my meals. Since starting this medication I have zero interest in food or drink and just use an app to hit macro targets per meal. I mix everything in a bowl without any seasoning or concern for temperature and eat ground meat because it is easy. I add plain yogurt for moisture and eat when the reminder goes off regardless of hunger. I no longer cook for my family. The upside is steady loss and some muscle gain but it feels strange that something I once enjoyed is now just a task.

I still pay some attention to taste even with shakes and prefer one brand over others. This sounds like plain dog food mixed with yogurt.

LevelAlder78archive5h

Same here. I have lost any interest in planning or cooking dinner.

I just do whatever I feel like. A little of whatever is in the food is not a big deal to me.

I eat to meet a goal and see it as part of the overall plan. I still like my own healthy cooking and what my wife makes.

The main issue for me is the effort of making a full meal when I get full after just a little. Even before this I only cooked enough for the next day to limit waste and avoid getting tired of recipes. Last night I had a few pieces of seasoned fish and some roasted greens and that was it. I have not used a pot or pan in a long time because it always leads to too much food and work.

I mostly do not care anymore as long as it has protein. I have to avoid gluten and a new bakery opened nearby so we bought a box of items. In the past I would have finished the whole thing but now I took one bite of most and stopped. I do like having leftovers though and make extra when I cook so I do not have to do it again soon.

RustSignal28archive5h

I just eat cottage cheese most of the time.

I relate to the original post. On the medication I have eaten basically the same simple meals for months with the same items for lunch and dinner and yogurt with fruit for breakfast. I switch in lean beef sometimes but not as often as the other protein. I add a daily multivitamin for anything missing. I used to put a lot of effort into marinades and spices but now I use almost none. It is boring but it works.

I still like good food and stop if it is not satisfying. I eat to hit protein targets so there is some mix. So far today I had a couple of high-protein shakes and a bowl with chicken cheese and chips for around one hundred grams of protein. I have no strong urge to go out so I will probably have another shake and more chicken later. I started with a few small cupcakes this morning. I have lost a lot of weight over many weeks on these medications while averaging steady weekly loss. I take mostly one with small amounts of the others. I can repeat the same meal or enjoy something different depending on the day. If there is a social meal coming I adjust earlier intake so I am not too full. I had a very high-calorie dip over two meals this week and a large portion of pizza last week. Pizza sounds good again tonight.

If my body allowed it I would be fine not eating much. I have eaten a lot of apples and joke that I am turning into a mascot from all the dairy. There are plenty of easy dairy options. When I do prepare something I still try to make it both nutritious and tasty. I cook a batch of eggs ahead on a free day and keep them ready. I also use pre-cooked chicken pieces that are simple and taste decent. I track intake with the same app and noticed better sleep scores once I fixed a couple of mineral levels. I like ultra-filtered milk products and shakes. Cottage cheese makes planning simple. I add chia seeds for fats since they have no taste.

Eating the same things without new options can help with weight loss to some extent.

I eat whatever I want now but there is not much that appeals anymore. I never liked cooking even though I can do it. Before this medication I followed a strict eating style and cooked often. Now I have to push myself to make anything and it is hard to reach the protein I need. Without shakes I would fall far short.

I am on maintenance now so I eat what I want. We cook dinner at home and split the work though I do more. I avoid fried food except wings and anything processed. I would like to gain a few pounds since I went a bit past my second goal but I still have some belly fat left.

↳ replying to @LevelThistle44

Good job staying in a safe range. The last bit around the middle takes its own time. Keep going and it will come off.

It is coming off slowly when I look in the mirror. I have lost a lot but that area still resists.

QuietAnchor73archive2h

After many weeks I am down a good amount and have been steady for the last month. I am basically at maintenance. Energy is returning and appetite is back to a normal level. I can eat and enjoy it more than before though not as much as prior. I am paying more attention to flavors again now that the main loss phase is over. This might be how it stays and I am okay with that.

BlueFenwick48archive2h

Over the past year I got into baking and enjoy it and am good at it according to others. I rarely taste what I make and when I do it is just okay even with recipes that used to be favorites. It is nice mentally to make treats and not want them so I can give them all away. At the same time food enjoyment was a big part of who I am so it feels like losing a piece of myself.

GreyAnchor47archive2h

I like organizing my food in advance and making big batches every seven days. These days I'm into legumes and meat-based dishes. A few days back I put together chicken pieces soaked in a yogurt spice mix plus seasoned beans to have at midday. During the weekend I get my midday and evening meals ready for the coming days by splitting them into containers. These days I take in smaller amounts than before yet everything must rely on natural items quality components and bold flavors otherwise it won't appeal enough to finish.

PlainQuill85archive2h

I feel the same. I used to love cooking but now I do it only because I have to. I still like the taste of what I make but I have no real interest in food. I hope the enjoyment of cooking returns because it feels a bit sad for my kids.

↳ replying to @GreyThistle69

Exactly. Food is not that important anymore. I am trying to eat more to keep my weight stable so I have been forcing down other things but it is just meh.

Very similar situation. Same number of weeks in with a big loss and now at maintenance. I lift weights and eat a bit differently than during the main phase. I still watch portions because of the remaining belly fat but I feel good overall.

At least one person in the studies was eating ice cream to keep from losing too much weight.

↳ replying to @SharpCinder28

That is partly why I had the pizza and dip. My overall path was fine but after a break I needed to catch up and it showed in the monthly rate. I might order pizza again.

Same here hoping the last bit comes off over the next year as I move more. I have a small supply of another medication I might try in small doses if needed.

GreyFenwick31archive1h

I eat because I make myself and I probably do not get enough protein if I am honest. I keep saying I will work on it but then I do not feel hungry so I do not want to cook. I bought some pre-cooked chicken this week and have not touched it. I just need to force myself to eat more protein because I am nowhere near one hundred grams a day.
