Reactions to Fried Foods While on Tirzepatide and Retatrutide

Summary

Why do fried or fatty foods trigger dizziness, sweating, and faint feelings on Tirz or Reta?

Users report repeated episodes of lightheadedness, sweating, and near-fainting after fried meals, often linked to slowed stomach emptying that triggers a vagal response rather than direct glucose swings. Alcohol produces similar but distinct effects from prolonged absorption. Individual tolerance varies sharply, with some able to eat moderate amounts of fat or ice cream without issue while others must avoid them entirely. Adding Reta can either intensify or relieve earlier GI symptoms depending on the person.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether the symptoms stem mainly from glucose/insulin changes or from vagal nerve stimulation and fat digestion.

Why some users experience strong reactions while others on the same drugs feel almost nothing.

Nothing here is advice.

My second attempt at fried food went badly. Each time it leaves me nearly blacking out with sweat, dizziness, and weakness. Has anyone else gone through this? It scared me badly, and I suspected blood sugar issues. Throwing Reta into the mix might have been a mistake because it appears to impact glucose levels more than Tirz by itself.

SlowLedger31archiveJun 13

That is one of the main things they warn against eating. It can get serious enough to need hospital care. Alcohol is probably even riskier. Still, the outcome depends on the quantity. I figured a few wings would be fine. Ended up with stomach trouble that lasted a full day.

I tried alcohol once and it was awful. Even though I used to drink heavily, just a couple of glasses made my legs shake. Tirz has removed my urge to drink, which is a big plus. The fried-food episode felt almost identical with the dizziness, sweating, and sudden panic. Whey protein does something similar though less intense, probably by spiking insulin quickly. Six weeks on Tirz and I keep learning new limits.

Almost a year on tirz and I still have not touched anything fried. The smell alone makes me queasy. I once collected an order from a place heavy on fries and had to hold back from gagging just from the air. I really appreciate what tirz does.

There is little reason to expect fatty food to move glucose or insulin much, and protein usually has almost no glycemic effect. The symptoms sound more like a response to fat itself, possibly nausea or gallstone-type discomfort without the actual pain, both of which are common on these drugs. Large or fatty meals are usually discouraged mainly to limit nausea. I have avoided high-fat eating for years now and feel no pull toward it on GLP-1s.

The first two months brought gut pain and constant bloating. Whey protein seemed to make it worse. Fatty meals left me queasy at times. Once I added Reta in month three, the indigestion, bloating, and slow digestion all disappeared and have stayed gone through month five.

These drugs slow how fast the stomach empties, so alcohol and fats now behave differently. Alcohol gets absorbed over a longer period. Fats create a coating effect. Your body is signaling that you should avoid them.

BrightCinder35archiveJun 13

I read that fatty or fried meals can set off a vagal response that produces the same signs as low blood sugar: sweating, dizziness, followed by panic.

BrightCinder35archiveJun 13

A hefty serving of oily meals that lingers undigested in the belly can trigger the vagus nerve into action. The resulting excess parasympathetic activity brings on sudden feelings of faintness, sickness, sweat, and palpitations in the heart right after finishing a meal.

A friend who started at over 350 pounds had his birthday three weeks in. His wife cooked chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes. He ate two servings and suffered badly with stomach upset afterward. I tell people these drugs push you toward cleaner eating.

CopperSignal27archiveJun 13

That actually lines up well as an explanation for the reaction.

SlowLedger31archiveJun 13

In a way it is helpful. I did not need that food anyway and now I cannot eat it. Works out well.

SteadyLedger60archiveJun 13

I had just said fatty foods were not bothering me. Then I ordered a very fatty burger, ate half, and felt mildly queasy. I had only intended to eat half, and apparently my stomach agreed.

PatientMeadow16archiveJun 14

You either change how you eat or you end up stopping the shots. Sorry that happened. Hopefully it serves as a lesson. I am a slow learner myself and paid the price multiple times with both fried food and alcohol. Early on I sometimes got away with it, but now I do not take the chance.

It is all trial and error. Alcohol is already out, and fatty foods are going the same way. It feels like a fresh start and I am fine with it.

I would like to test things with Italian food. If possible I would eat Parmigiano at every meal and stick to antipasti, which would be plenty given how little appetite I have now.

Honestly, dieting on Tirz in Italy is straightforward and enjoyable with lots of options even when eating out. I travel often for work and in many other places it is much harder to stay on track.

WryHarbour43archiveJun 14

I can still handle fatty foods, ice cream, and alcohol, just in smaller amounts. Reactions are not the same for everyone. If a couple of fries made me sick I would probably quit these drugs quickly.

I have been fortunate as well. Ribs, wings, and brisket have not caused problems even though they bother some people. I do not eat large portions of them, but so far nothing has hit me hard.

For me there is no chance. Alcohol and fried food hit extremely hard and feel frightening. Fatty meals leave me with nausea that is manageable, and ice cream is usually fine. People vary, but I am glad to have stopped drinking.

My sister just went through the same thing. We went to 5 Guys. I got a regular burger and she got the lettuce-wrap version. She does not eat high-fat meals as often as I do, and she is on a higher dose. She described it as everything having to come out fast, including from her bowels.

SharpWillow45archiveJun 17

I have not had anything fried since starting, but even a meal high in fat leaves me a bit nauseated so I stop after a few bites.

Same experience when I was on Tirz. It was actually helpful because I could keep up normal social eating without anyone knowing I was on the medication. A big night of drinking still left me feeling off the next day, but it was tolerable.

WarmWillow50archiveJun 23

People have varying reactions... fried foods just don't work for me at all. Once I tried some battered fish and ended up heaving over the toilet for thirty minutes 🀒 Recently I enjoyed some grilled pork ribs, they tasted amazing... yet I suffered afterward, though without throwing up. Booze affects me likewise, though I rarely drank much before, perhaps just a few times annually. Now even one causes a quick high, and a second would likely lead to illness. On the bright side, the items I skip these days were unhealthy to begin with. These days I stick to foods harvested from soil, plants or by hunting... plus cheese now and then.
