Anhedonia from retatrutide doses and options for mood recovery with tirzepatide or TRT

72 replies42 peopleJul 16, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

how to address anhedonia and low motivation while using these compounds for weight loss or related benefits

Users link higher retatrutide doses to anhedonia and emotional flattening, with partial improvement after dose reduction, switching back to tirzepatide, or full discontinuation. Daily low-dose tadalafil is noted for easing BPH symptoms and supporting sexual function, while TRT is reported to restore libido and drive. Newer additions such as tesofensine and saffron are discussed for countering flat affect and boosting workout motivation. Participants weigh whether to continue pushing toward final weight goals or shift focus to mental recovery.

Down almost 120 pounds and 20 left to drop. Running 8mg tirz with 8mg reta split every four days plus 2mg Tesa on a five-on two-off schedule. Morning test readings came back low twice already this year so I signed up for some bloodwork and hope the replacement will bring back drive and interest that have been missing. Mood is decent and I still train but libido has been gone for years, muscles refuse to grow, and after work all I do is stare at the phone. Used to attack the yard when I weighed 330 but now with the weight mostly gone I can barely start the weedeater and just quit. Stalled for six weeks and the anhedonia is brutal.

ClearMeadow73archiveJul 16

Same here, the flat feeling still hits hard some days but Semax changed things for me. Not sure if you have tried it. I also cut the reta dose back and stayed on tirz only, and four days later the scale finally moved again though it might be coincidence.

You are doing fine, the weight is already down and you are clearly stressed. Skip the lawn tonight, just relax and do something that feels good. Tomorrow you can regroup and the progress will still be there when you are ready.

CopperSignal27archiveJul 16

No clear answers from me but I have felt the same drop in drive after losing a lot of weight. A year or more of low calories makes the body want to conserve energy so you feel like doing nothing, even before the GLP effects are added. You cannot eat more without regaining and you are probably already at the point where extra movement just makes the body more efficient. One option some people look at is a different compound at low dose that can still support loss with fewer sides and might let you lower the current doses.

Let me shorten that for you. You are looking forward to starting testosterone.

LevelBramble14archiveJul 16

With 120 already gone and only 20 left I would shift focus to how you look and feel overall instead of the scale number. It is a long game and the final weight target is just something you made up. If you can do the things you want then you are basically there. Body composition will keep improving if you stay consistent.

LevelCinder55archiveJul 16

Anhedonia means reduced ability to feel pleasure from things that used to be enjoyable. It shows up in depression and some other conditions. There are social and physical versions. Signs include lack of drive, feeling numb, and not looking forward to anything. Causes are still being studied but it ties into brain chemistry changes.

BlueQuill49archiveJul 16

Might sound simple but set up small rewards for the tasks you want to do. Tell yourself that finishing the yard work gets you something you actually want, write it down, and let someone else know you are committing to it. Then follow through and collect the reward.

First give yourself credit, most people never manage what you have done. Everything has a downside though. If motivation is already low I would not add another compound that can flatten people even more. Some report the same drained feeling on other options too. Maybe just push to the goal then drop to maintenance. Quitting the stronger doses made me feel better overall. You are close.

SlowLedger31archiveJul 16

I do not have the motivation problem but dating, hobbies, and even cooking all feel flat. Work stuff still fires me up though.

LevelWillow41archiveJul 16

I feel the same stall about 15 pounds out. Probably need to raise the current doses to finish the last bit, then start the testosterone. After that you can eat a little more, train hard, and adjust the goal. I have to keep fertility so I cannot go that route but bloodwork would be useful.

Interesting, I have also been skipping the reta lately and just using the other one. Checking if the heart rate issue is from it. No movement on the scale though. What amounts are you on right now?

ClearMeadow73archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @CopperBeacon14

I was doing 2mg reta on Monday and 8mg of the other on Thursday. Now just the 8mg every five days. Tinnitus got worse after adding reta so I am stopping it to see if that helps.

GreenMeadow54archiveJul 16

Track calories even if you do not want to. The meds are not magic and you need real numbers if you want to add muscle. I lost a lot of fat and gained muscle once I saw my levels were low. TRT will probably fix a big part of the motivation issue. Also consider easing the doses back once you start replacement so you can focus on lifting and recomp instead of more loss.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 16

I have not lost as much but I hit my target and sometimes felt the same flatness. Lately I have been busy again with yard work and projects around the house. It passes.

GreenLedger79archiveJul 16

The flat feeling seems to depend on which compound people use. I got it on two of them but not the third. Have you tried switching things around? It is not something I can tolerate for long.

GreenHarbour50archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @AmberCompass48 (opening post)

I had treatment resistant depression for ten years and anhedonia was a big piece of it. Tried many meds with bad sides. One session with a certain mushroom reset things for me. I started writing again the next day and after a couple more spaced out sessions the depression stayed gone for three years now. Not for everyone and family history of certain conditions means skip it.

NorthWillow72archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @AmberCompass48 (opening post)

I have noticed the same drop in drive. Often happens after hitting a big goal and then nothing new is lined up. TRT helped other things but not that specific issue. Setting a fresh target like a trip or project can help get the spark back. You have plenty of other things going on already.

KeenFenwick72archiveJul 16

Libido has been low since the weight came off and feels even lower now. Eating right, staying hydrated, running a couple times a week, but it takes everything I have. Starting to affect the relationship. Might check levels but local doctors do not seem interested.

LevelLedger10archiveJul 16

You look good already from the photos I have seen. People keep telling me the same thing. If the goal number is the only thing left maybe raise calories for a bit to reset, or ease the doses down slowly toward maintenance. That can reduce the emotional drain and let you focus on recomp. You might end up happier at a slightly higher weight once muscle is back.

Ready for a decent weedeater but the cheap ones are not worth it so I grabbed some larger shirts instead since they fit now.

AmberCompass48archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @CopperSignal27

Thanks, glad you are back with the good input. Money is not an issue so I could try the other option, and I already have the test on hand. Was waiting to hit goal first but once labs return I will talk with the clinic. Worried about growing new tissue though and do not want that at all.

RustBeacon82archiveJul 16

Dealing with the exact same lack of drive and joy right now even though the weight is down. Friends who tried a certain wakefulness med said it gave them energy back so I ordered some and will test it. Tried other things like NAD with no noticeable change. 120 pounds is still something to celebrate.

AmberCompass48archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @WryHarbour70

Thanks. Yes I am excited but someone mentioned a possible side that could give me the same issue I just got rid of so I slowed down on starting. Hoping the replacement will help the way the other meds did even if it takes time.

AmberCompass48archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @LevelBramble14

You are right, everyone has been on point so far. Waist is down another inch this week and nearly 18 inches total since the start. Arms look defined though still smaller than I want. Middle is still blocky but with a shirt on it looks decent. Body image is probably off too. Composition is shifting and I know it is a long process.

LevelSignal13archiveJul 16

Long term I run test with another compound as the main items. Both on higher and lower amounts they improve confidence, energy, and drive. The second one especially helps mentally, sexually, and with training. Recently cut with reta and growth hormone then took a break and weight rebounded a bit. Looking forward to adding it back while keeping the other stack.

RustBramble70archiveJul 16

120 pounds is huge and worth feeling good about. The last 20 are annoying but the real issue might be fixating on that number and letting it feed the flat feeling. Prioritizing getting some joy back matters more than the scale. You already have a full life and are still in your 50s so there is time to add new targets.

AmberCompass48archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @LevelCinder55

Good breakdown. I work with seniors in long term care and stay busy leading activities, helping residents, and running events. Still do weekend river floats and have a bike but nothing feels exciting during the week. Yard work and walking the dogs are the hardest to start after work.

Not juvenile at all, that is solid advice.

If you are a guy consider daily low dose tadalafil even without any performance issue. It supports blood flow, prostate, heart, and can make things feel more interesting again. Many men over 35 use it for the extra benefits including better pumps in the gym.

SlowAnchor19archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @GreenHarbour50

My insurance contact takes it for a blood pressure related issue and lost weight from the extra activity it allowed.

SharpWillow45archiveJul 16

Similar spot here so I set fixed workout times, added cardio, and cut social stuff to focus on family and work. Dropping alcohol helped the slump a lot. Occasional use of a certain mushroom also seemed to lift the flat feeling for me.

GreenHarbour50archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @SlowAnchor19

I still get it from overseas sources because it makes things work like they did years ago. The other health upsides are real too.

LevelAlder29archiveJul 16

Sorry you are in the gray area right now. Therapist points that helped me: you do not owe constant happiness to anyone, and this will not last forever. We are all here while you work through it.

32 year old guy here. Local doctors are not open to prescribing it unfortunately but I would like to try.

GreenHarbour50archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @KeenFenwick72

Generic versions are easy to find from overseas pharmacies and very affordable. I use one specific brand.

NorthWillow72archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @GreenHarbour50

Considering it for nighttime bathroom trips. What amount do you take? Overseas sources have the 20mg tablets.

KeenFenwick72archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @GreenHarbour50

Is it literally that site on a search? And do you take it every day or as needed? Do not want issues at work.

GreenHarbour50archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @NorthWillow72

I use 5mg when needed and sometimes go to 10 if my partner wants more. I avoid going over 20mg even though doctors sometimes prescribe higher. For sexual benefits you only take it when required rather than every day. It kicks in after about half an hour and the window lasts three or four days without constant effects. For other reasons people often use 1 or 2mg each day to maintain steady levels. I split 20mg tablets into quarters. Headache and a stuffy nose are the usual sides and they are milder at lower amounts and fade with time. The headache comes from extra blood flow to the brain so it is not harmful but can be eased with pain relief. Avoid heavy drinking while on it and never combine with nitrates.

GreenHarbour50archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @KeenFenwick72

I covered the amounts in the reply above. You will not experience unwanted effects at work because nothing happens without sexual stimulation.

NorthWillow72archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @GreenHarbour50

That lines up. The BPH dose is usually 5mg each day. Tadalafil is approved for easing symptoms of an enlarged prostate by relaxing smooth muscle there and in the bladder. For that purpose it is commonly taken daily at a low dose and urinary relief often shows up within one to four weeks. It is also considered when someone has both BPH and erectile issues.

GreenHarbour50archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @NorthWillow72

I missed that you were asking about the prostate issue. Yes it helps with that as well. I noticed the change myself. I used to wake up four or more times a night and sometimes felt the urge without being able to go. Both problems disappeared completely once I started the medication.

AmberMarble84archiveJul 16

I had to stop tirzepatide at higher amounts and then retatrutide at 4mg because of the same lack of feeling and motivation. Three weeks after stopping I had more energy and my mood improved. You are using fairly high amounts so lowering the dose a little could help. I am still using cagrilintide and waiting on another compound. I only need a few more pounds but the last months left me with zero drive.

IronLantern24archiveJul 16

Anhedonia is rough. I have no interest in anything and usually have to push myself to eat. The small amount of enjoyment I started with has disappeared. I wanted to lose weight so I would have more energy for tasks but now I can hardly get myself to exercise.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @NorthWillow72

How old are you? No need to answer if you prefer not to. An enlarged prostate can cause those nighttime trips. My PSA looks good but urination is not as easy as before. I am planning to see a urologist. Cutting back fluids after dinner has helped and now I only get up once or twice.

GreyFenwick31archiveJul 16

This might sound like pointless advice but try something different from your usual routine. Maybe read something positive. You could be stuck in a negative loop and a bit of uplift might help break it.

PlainAlder11archiveJul 16
↳ replying to @NorthWillow72

I am eight years older than you. I was waking five or six times a night and it wrecked my sleep. I was drinking way too much water because I thought it would help with the diet but it flushed out electrolytes. Now I am dealing with low sodium and low chloride. I had bloodwork done this morning.
