Early Reta Aggressive Cut?

8 replies5 peopleApr 9, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

How should someone on early retatrutide handle an aggressive cut with limited protein intake and no gym access?

The original poster is three weeks into 2 mg retatrutide split dosing and using appetite suppression to run a 1500-1600 calorie cut with 120 g protein from shakes plus cardio. Several replies argue the protein target is too low and cardio too high, warning of muscle loss and recommending closer to 160-200 g daily from real food. The poster acknowledges the ideal but cites current constraints, plans a short-term shift to whole foods, and accepts some muscle loss in exchange for faster fat reduction. Others counter that rapid cuts lead to worse body composition, lower maintenance calories, and gaunt appearance.

Sorry this post is pretty light on details, but I wanted to open a thread for feedback on what others are trying. It feels like there's a limited window here and no free rides. I'm in week three on 2 mg reta split into doses and the appetite control is right where I want it. Started at 237 lbs, six foot, never trained much but used supplements and other compounds before. First week I dropped four pounds mostly from undereating and felt wiped out. Week two I tried to be more deliberate but didn't split protein well and only lost three pounds, which annoyed me. Being out of work I'm pushing a hard cut now with about 120 g quality protein split across four or five shakes, some fiber for digestion, and plenty of cardio. No gym access so I'm doing what I can at home for upper body and core. Not tracking carbs closely, just keeping calories at 1500-1600 with three or more hours of activity.

I'd push protein intake nearer to 200 g per day. That should limit muscle loss and keep hunger down better.

That would be perfect but right now it's just hard to manage.

Protein is too low and cardio volume is too high. You'll end up the same shape only smaller because of lost muscle. Protein targets vary but at roughly your height I hold muscle fine on about 160 g a day.

If nearly all your calories are coming from five shakes that's not ideal. Eat actual meals like chicken, lean steak or turkey. Shakes should only top up what real food doesn't cover.

It's a premium beef isolate with colostrum and organ meats included. I'll be fine for a five-day cut. Tomorrow I'm switching to a pound of beef and five eggs, maybe a chicken breast. Food is what got me here in the first place.

How long did your cut last? I noticed strength dropping in the first two weeks while protein was inconsistent, and it's improved but still not where I want it. Protein is still a work in progress. I know it's not optimal, yet I'm okay losing a bit of muscle. Putting it back on is easier than dropping fat again. When I was heavier I had no trouble hitting 200 g daily.

Pushing hard cuts doesn't help much unless you're an IFBB pro two weeks from stage. Slow and steady wins.

Mine ran about six months. I just finished a bulk and expect another two to three months to reach 12-13 percent body fat again. Muscle memory helps recovery but there's no point rushing down only to look and feel terrible. A fast cut plus the time to rebuild muscle usually takes longer than doing it properly. I won't accept feeling weak, partly from background and partly from experience. Losing lean mass can also drop your maintenance calories too low. Rapid loss without protecting muscle often leaves a gaunt face and a strange skinny-fat shape, which is why facial fillers are common after careless GLP use. I see these drugs as tools to stick with a solid diet and training plan rather than a way to crash weight quickly.
