Summary

how to adjust daily fiber intake when starting a GLP-1 that slows digestion

The original poster follows the 15 g per 1000 kcal guideline and sits at 45 g on a 3000 kcal cut. Replies advise keeping intake steady or dropping it temporarily, spreading fiber evenly across meals, and waiting past the first one to two weeks before fine-tuning. Several users report success adding ground chia and flax or probiotics and enzymes once the medication has settled.

This might sound dumb but I need a direct answer here. I stick to the 15 g fiber per 1000 calories guideline so on my 3000 calorie cut I land around 45 g to keep digestion moving and stay full. Once I add a GLP-1 that slows things down I wonder if I should raise the fiber to help it along, drop it so the slowdown does not get worse, or just leave it alone. I am unsure what to do. At least my gas stays mild and I want to keep that.

When you begin anything that affects digestion it helps to lower the amount first and then slowly raise it while watching how you respond. I had to change my own supplements after starting magnesium glycinate because it has a mild osmotic effect and needed readjustment. A 3000 calorie cut is quite high compared with most people here.

You are already thinking about this the right way and 15 g per 1000 calories puts you well above most people. I was at a similar level before starting GLPs, noticed the slowdown, and tried raising fiber too. Spreading it evenly across the whole day made the biggest difference for me or else bathroom results became unpredictable. Keep the total the same for now, aim for even distribution, and be ready to tweak later. The first week is usually too chaotic to make useful changes so wait until after that. You might end up needing more or you might not, it just depends on how you feel once you begin. Adding pre or probiotics plus a digestive enzyme could also help since food stays longer and you want your body to break it down properly.

I will probably drop to 30 g for the first couple of weeks as a safety step, then see how I feel and change from there. I had not considered probiotics before because I never had big problems, but I will check into those and the enzymes since they might solve the digestion side of things. Thanks for the suggestions.

I finally asked an AI and settled on a tablespoon and a half of chia seeds plus the same amount of ground flaxseeds. Now I go once a day without any effort and it feels much better. Before I started the medication it was difficult and happened only rarely.

I am not a fan of chia seeds but if they can sort out the gut issue I will give them a shot. They would also add some extra bulk to my morning oats so it seems worth trying.

Grinding the seeds first in a small blender and then adding them to protein shakes works well for me. If texture is the problem that step might help before mixing into oats.

I stir both into my post-workout protein shake and the flax plus chia combination gave me the best results. Good luck and I hope it settles for you.
