How you store a peptide depends entirely on which form it is in. As a freeze-dried powder it is stable and forgiving; once you mix it with bacteriostatic water into a solution, it becomes fragile and time-limited. Get those two states right — cold, dark, and dated — and you avoid the two things that ruin peptides: heat and time.

The two states, and why they matter

A research peptide arrives as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder. In that dry state it is at its most stable — there is very little water available for chemical breakdown, so kept cold and dark it keeps for a long time. Reconstitution — adding bacteriostatic water — turns it into a solution, and a peptide in solution is far more fragile. Bacteriostatic water's benzyl-alcohol preservative holds off microbial growth so you can re-enter the vial over days or weeks1, but it does nothing to stop the peptide itself from slowly degrading. So the rules differ by state.

Storing the powder (before reconstitution)

Keep freeze-dried peptides cold, dark, and dry. Storing the solution (after reconstitution)

Once mixed, refrigerate the vial and treat the clock as running. Label it with its concentration and the date so you always know where it is in its window, and keep it out of light. Heat, light, and freeze-thaw

Three things degrade peptides:

  • Heat — the biggest one. A vial left in a warm room, a hot car, or sunlight loses potency fastest.
  • Light — UV and bright light drive breakdown; keep vials in the dark.
  • Repeated freeze-thaw — cycling a solution in and out of the freezer can damage peptides, which is why the powder, not the solution, is the form usually frozen.

Travelling with peptides

Keep vials cold and insulated — an insulated pouch with a cold pack — and out of direct heat and sunlight. Avoid the extremes a bag left in a car or a hold can reach; the goal is simply to keep the vial near refrigerator temperature and never let it bake or freeze unintentionally. Carry whatever documentation your situation calls for.
